Title is pretty explicit, what do you think about separating church (or religion as a whole) from the state?

can someone more knowledgeable explain the relevant history of communism in west asia? i can't remember where i heard it but someone said the soviet insistence on atheism was partly responsible for the failure of communism in the region. is there any truth in that?
