Look, I don't like every view he holds, but he works across the aisle.

[–] bob_lemon@feddit.org 8 points 3 days ago

Technically, this would be nuking the UAE and Yemen

[–] smuuthbrane@sh.itjust.works 163 points 3 days ago (6 children)

"Yes, we're irradiated now, but gas is under $3/gal."

[–] Kirp123@lemmy.world 39 points 3 days ago (3 children)

Well it would be Dubai and the Saudis that would be irradiated. They should be fine with it right?

[–] Ariselas@piefed.ca 33 points 3 days ago (7 children)

the gas would likely be irradiated too. I heard of an early proposal to detonate nukes deep underground in the tar sands to bring the oil to the top, theoretically it would work but radioactive oil.

[–] Rcklsabndn@sh.itjust.works 29 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Not irradiated! It's been treated with Shell Atomic Boost!

Just look for the glowing pump.

[–] InternetCitizen2@lemmy.world 18 points 3 days ago

This is the talent McDonald's marketing needs.

Less than that. They'd have to sell this particular gas at a discount, considering it would be radioactive after making this detour.

[–] backalleycoyote@lemmy.today 5 points 3 days ago

You’re forgetting the power of marketing. Call it “Atomic Premium”, claim it’s formulated specifically for giant trucks with fake balls attached to the hitch, get a few hick-hop artists to name drop it in songs about cruising down red dirt roads, and run a meme campaign implying only woke blue-haired lib trannies with nose rings oppose irradiated gas. They’d drink it if they thought doing so would “own the libs”.

It's not. This has been proposed multiple times throughout history. The U.S. program, named Project Plowshare, was active from the late 1950s to the 1970s and explored various peaceful applications for nuclear explosives. It was built on ideas from older, British and German plans. The Russians also had their own plans. This is not a new idea.

just a couple of nuclear detonations!

Tell me your mentally removed without saying the words

Tell me you have no idea about nuclear bombs, not the radiation, not the capabilities, nothing, without saying those words

Tell me you're the dumbest fuck in class without saying the words

[–] Goldmage263@sh.itjust.works 5 points 2 days ago

This can't be a real tweet, right?

[–] village604@adultswim.fan 5 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago) (1 children)

Maybe he read the Arthur C. Clarke book where they used a super computer to figure out where to detonate nukes underground along fault lines to prevent a mega earthquake?

antiwoke, or asleep as I like to call them

[–] Furbag@lemmy.world 6 points 3 days ago
[–] Danarchy@lemmy.nz 9 points 2 days ago (1 children)

The key here is that you have to personally supervise the first explosion real close up to make sure the channels are correct. I had chatgpt design a special hard hard for you Mr Gangrinhch, so it’s got mondo safety parameters to keep you fit as a whistle

[–] GutterRat42@lemmy.world 7 points 2 days ago

The biggest surprise for me is that he is still alive

[–] stoy@lemmy.zip 46 points 3 days ago

For those who don't know about it, Project Plowshare was a cold war project where the US investigating the use of nuclear weapons for geo engineering projects.

Here is a WTYP Podcast episode about it:

What a goddamned fucking idiot.

How much you wanna bet he called Trump and personally made this fucking deranged suggestion to him?

[–] AlfalFaFail@lemmy.ml 10 points 3 days ago

Neocons doing material analysis.

[–] lechekaflan@lemmy.world 22 points 3 days ago (1 children)

I thought this motherfucker was dead.

[–] VitoRobles@lemmy.today 17 points 3 days ago

I mean it's such a braindead take that he might as well be

[–] ulterno@programming.dev 11 points 3 days ago

Somebody ate too much Lead

[–] DarkFuture@lemmy.world 9 points 3 days ago

Eww.

I had to check and this dipshit is still alive.

Can we not have anything nice around here?

[–] ChillPenguin@lemmy.world 19 points 3 days ago (1 children)

It's gotta be lead.... Right? Right?!

[–] Wilco@lemmy.zip 8 points 3 days ago (4 children)

Absolutely has to be lead poisoning. We need to get these insane fuckers tested for it and have them committed if it shows in their system. That may be exactly what is needed and how to "peacefully" get these weird fuckers to retire.

It's satire. Gingrich didn't even write the OG article...

[–] AlfalFaFail@lemmy.ml 6 points 3 days ago

It's satire, but newt ate the onion. And when does, he passes it around saying, "Delicious. Want a taste?"

[–] Bamboodpanda@lemmy.world 5 points 3 days ago

As funny as I find that article to be. The problem is that satire is reality most of the time these days. Even an idea as obviously dumb as this could actually be coming out of the white house.

[–] A_Random_Idiot@lemmy.world 13 points 3 days ago

Oh god they are trying to do Plowshare 2.0.

[–] billwashere@lemmy.world 4 points 2 days ago

He’s not wrong. He’s just an idiot.

[–] nymnympseudonym@piefed.social 18 points 3 days ago (10 children)

Is this... actually Newt? Honestly can't tell would appreciate clarification

[–] fluffykittycat@slrpnk.net 12 points 3 days ago

I too want to know if project plowshare is back on the menu

I was gonna say. This idea has been floating around for decades.

Bottom line: Yes it will work. It will also involve transporting nuclear warheads to another country, which probably violates all kinds of treaties and will set governments everywhere into a panic of epic proportions. The knock-on effects of nuclear contamination will be a problem for the local population, local water table, and local ocean currents. You can bet your bottom-dollar that these, and possibly more, problems will be shouldered solely by the soon-to-be-god-forsaken masses of whatever country eventually okays this idea.

I've stopped asking if people are this stupid, because yes, they are.

But, I think this is more about sowing fear, than a serious suggestion.

I keep trying to persuade myself, in spite of clear evidence to the contrary, that people are not this stupid. But, it doesn't work.
