No bigotry of any kind allowed. Making racist, sexist, trans-/homo-/queerphobic, otherwise demeaning and hateful comments is not ok. Disabilities and mental illnesses are not to be used as insults and should not be part of your comment unless speaking of your own or absolutely relevant.

No gatekeeping and being rude to people who don't agree with you. Leave “gamer” stereotypes out of your comment (e.g. sexless, neck bearded, teenaged, basement-dwelling, etc). Don't compare people to animals, or otherwise deny their humanity. Even if you think someone is the worst human on the planet, do not wish death or harm upon them.

No "justice porn". Posts regarding legal action and similar is allowed, but celebrating someone being harmed is not.

Contrarianism for its own sake is unnecessary and not welcome.

No planning operations, no brigading, no doxxing or similar activities allowed.

Absolutely no defense of GamerGate and other right-wing harassment campaigns, no TERFs and transphobia, racism, dismissing of war crimes and praise of fascists. This includes “JAQing off”, intentionally asking leading questions while pretending to be a neutral party. This also applies to other forms of authoritarianism and authoritarian or criminal actions by liberal or leftist governments.

NSFW threads, such as ones discussing erotic art, pornography and sex work, must be tagged as such.

Moderators can take action even if none of the rules above are broken.

Joss used his last moments to push his partner out of harm's way. If he'd reached for his gun instead, maybe the bullets hit differently. But it wouldn't have stopped what happened.

If you feel safer then arm yourself. But there aren't that many situations where having a gun stops you being hurt. More commonly it escalates to violence faster, or just lets you hurt someone back.

Sure, I'm strongly in favor of hurting nazis, that's a perfectly reasonable goal of gun ownership. But that's very different from thinking that a gun increases your personal safety or prevents violence being done to you.

I actually think that this line of thinking is, in itself, incredibly homophobic. I'm pretty sure I'm not the only one who thinks so either.

You’re right. It is damaging to the LGBT community when people say shit like this. This line of thinking is everywhere online, and it needs to stop. The people that commit these crimes are bigots, not closeted homosexuals. “Every accusation is a confession”. Not when it comes to anti-gay violence. Anti-gay violence is rooted in hate, not some fear of being outed for being gay.

I don't think either of you are wrong, tbh. I don't think they're completely wrong because it seems like, time and time again, the most outspoken homophobes tend to be caught engaging in homosexual acts themselves. At the same time, however, it feels kinda dismissive and like it's shifting the blame.

Like, "this could have been avoided if the poor man was just able to freely express himself".

No, there's no guarantee that would have happened, and regardless, he still (presumably) burned down their house, dug up their dog's bones, put the dog's remains on display, and then murdered the victim, all because they were gay. That's absolutely disgusting and it doesn't matter if the murderer was closeted gay or not, he's still a disgusting inhuman creature who went above and beyond to cause someone as much pain and grief as possible.

I might not use the same language, but I have also noted that so often, these right wing anti-gay crusaders have secret gay lives. Highlighting their hypocrisy in addition to their hatred. I wouldn't want to seem at all homophobic, can you explain what I'm missing?

I guess because it links being gay to being deceitful, or in general associates homosexuality as being shameful?

I don't really buy that? I'm just calling hypocrites hypocrites when they are being hypocritical.

But I'm open to being educated.

I'm not gonna pretend to be any more educated.

But, to be straightforward, the issue is less acknowledging that it occurs, but rather what's implied when suggesting that all or most people that commit homophobic violence are themselves, gay.

One is suggesting that homophobic violence is largely or entirely between gays, both excusing homophobic behavior (righteous homosexuals still know violence is the right option) and reinforcing the idea that homosexuality is a mental illness.
