I felt that way about it the first time watching it. A friend convinced me to view it again with him. Maybe it was the company, but I found a lot more nuance in it the second time, and was able to appreciate the performances. Still may be my least favorite of the HBO, but I definitely enjoyed it.

Glad it's not just me!
I agree with you. For me it also had a lot to do with the subject matter. I just couldn't be bothered to care about a bunch of fascist jarheads and maybe one or two of them were "sad" about killing children.
I did slog through it and I at least appreciated that in the end it made a point that the warcrimes they were committing were not just swept under the rug but encouraged through the use of promotions and punishments if not in written policy.
