I don't interact with the various other Lemmy instances very often. I see almost no point in it, it's just reddit. All they post is endless articles from the Atlantic or Wall Street journal. Elon musk this, orange man that, all useless, pointless posting.

Recently, their favorite flavor of slop has been the "Tiananmen square massacre". This has brought out the worst in them. We live rent free in their heads, but especially whenever a socialist government is mentioned. They all come crawling out of their basements, pushing Funko pops and copies of Hogwarts legacy out of the way of their crusty, rainbow light keyboards to claim their knowledge of a Chinese protest is infallible.

My god do they not let up either. Any rebuttal is shut down by these drones. Any mention of "what about the Americans many war crimes?" Activates their inner CIA sleeper agent, and they hit you with "commies are just whataboutism. That's all they have. Well at least we have freedom. At least we aren't committing genocide." All extremely easy to debunk claims.

Don't get me started on isr*el. They sure do love their ethnic cleansing. More so than even the loudest of American Republicans I've ever heard. To them, Gaza is all "terrorists". They should all be killed in their eyes, their only hope of redemption is "non violent protest", aka, just lay down and die. Never in my life have I seen a larger group of far right genocidal freaks than I have on Lemmy world.

It's so ridiculous, it's comical. Say something like "hey this is misinformation" and a thousand replies will hit your inbox, all from dudes that post things like "Hamas needs to be destroyed", "people who don't vote shouldn't complain about anything" and my personal favorite one "Uh actually, I support the maori MPs getting suspended for doing the haka. That stupid dance is disruptive" (Yeah, real comments, not hyperbole)

The Nazis are in our backyard. And they should be bullied back to reddit where they belong.

I visited a propaganda subreddit, and now reddit routinely shows me colorized nazi propaganda with zero context. I could hide the sub, and get reddit to appear more left. But it's definitely way to the right of the world libs

[–] blame@hexbear.net 41 points 15 hours ago

No dude we can talk about the American war crimes another time. We're talking specifically about the war crimes of the Soviet Union, a country that no longer exists. Yes I understand we never actually talk about American war crimes but I'm sorry you bringing that up is whataboutism, I don't make the rules.

I wonder how the admins of .ml feel about the software platform they developed being taken over by Reddit neoliberals who actively despise leftists more than anything else and are aggressively trying to drive .ml users off the fediverse (and succeeding).

[–] Enjoyer_of_Games@hexbear.net 15 points 9 hours ago

As I recall they specifically wanted there to be a popular liberal lemmy and their own joinlemmy site directed much of the growth of lemmy.world.

I believe they viewed this as a distasteful but necessary action in order kill the cultural power of reddit. Even if a post-reddit multi-polarity is dominated by liberal sites it will still be preferable to the situation of a singularly dominant liberal site (reddit) that we have now.

Hopefully they are taking notes on the nature of open source under capitalism.

[–] Chana@hexbear.net 19 points 14 hours ago

And like all right wingers they are afraid of right-punching and accordingly left-punch with censorship based on bullshit shibboleths rather than concrete and true criticisms.

whataboutism is effective propaganda to shut down discourse. china only looks bad in a vacuum and their cia brainwashers know this.

i have blocked about 2/3rd of politics comms on lib instances and got banned from the other 3rd because i don't really like US narratives.

[–] Belly_Beanis@hexbear.net 33 points 17 hours ago (2 children)

A day or two ago, some lib on .ee was calling Hexbear, .ML, and Lemmygrad the "triad of extremism." Hilarious, really.

[–] umbrella@lemmy.ml 23 points 16 hours ago* (last edited 16 hours ago)

thats like common now, for a while.

New axis of evil

[–] Maeve@kbin.earth 36 points 19 hours ago (2 children)

They're pretty toxic. When I first came, almost every sub was pro-Palestinian genocide. They've started coming around (Johnny come lately) but have doubled down on Ukraine not Nazis.

If that one dude that constantly masturbates to communism ever comes out of his denial closet, he's going to be one hell of an ally.

[–] brain_in_a_box@hexbear.net 27 points 16 hours ago (1 children)

They started coming around when Trump came into power, before that, they needed to support it because that was the democrat party line

[–] Maeve@kbin.earth 2 points 4 hours ago

Ah yeah, that makes sense and seems to add up.

Not sure why but replies are slow to federate, since last night.

[–] Diva@hexbear.net 36 points 18 hours ago (1 children)

The posing like they suddenly care about Palestine is actually infuriating. I started using lemmy shortly after oct 7 and gravitated to .ml because it didn't make me feel like I was going to lose my mind reading the comments.

[–] Maeve@kbin.earth 5 points 5 hours ago

I'm not sure it's posing, but it certainly could be. I think it's because a few of us kept relentlessly countering the hasbara/US narrative. They think they're incredibly clever, but breaking through centuries of multigenerational propaganda is hard.

They readily admit legacy media is lying about a few topics but if it's not touched them personally, they are having trouble breaking through the last layers of pig shit. And in more cases than not, even then. I have a feeling that's going to change, sooner than later. I expect things to get uglier before better.

Eta: I'm developing the preference to seek the refuge of the hard truths of .ml than the outright delusions of the wider Lemmy delusions.

Finally someone talking about them

.world, while I havent explicitely Seen a nazi there yet, is completely Obsessed with their tankies. Its always „tankies this, tankies that, .ml bad because everyone is a tankie”

They are like 1960s USA, just regurgitating some Image of a Communist Tankie and wanking off together when they draw a funny clown nose on it.

And they should be bullied back to reddit where they belong.

Apply that to just about anything open source.

At a risk of sounding like a Nazi (which I am not, since if you ever cared about Human rights [more specifically access to information for everyone] you could have at any time just looked it up, since unlike with Geopolitics there is no reason for you to somehow be able to use sites like Lemmy, yet somehow not inform yourself about FOSS, therefore your knowledge with FOSS does not depend on any racial, ethnic, or gender factors, and therefore I literally cannot discriminate you based you something you aren't mostly responsible for, and on the opposite, I am only judging you by your own Merits):

Just fucking look at these Reddit refugee Communities. Somehow they never Start with „I am here because I hate capitalism” or „I never used a 3rd Party client, but when reddit starts restricting the worlds biggest concentration of information, my Right to information senses were tickling” (I personally just heard about the Fediverse when looking at Wordpress, since its regarded as that by some, and decided to switch completely when I beard about reddit shutting down the api)

No. Its always: „I was personally affected, so I joined here”. They do not give a fuck about FOSS. They do not give a fuck about decentralisation. They only give a fuck about them not being able to talk.

This is literally „first they came for the communists” type of shit happening here. But now instead of them having to live in their own shit that they made a reality in their first place by staying after the API thing, we just give them a free pass.

If you are German, you have sure heard about the „denazification” that literally didn't happen. This is the same. The 3rd Reich imploded, yet we for some reason still let the Nazis just live after them filling out a Quiz.

  1. Do you care about decentralisation (you don't need to explain what that even means)? [Yes][No]
  2. Do you like Reddit? [Yes][No]

You are officially rehabilitated!

So down with the centralisation efforts of .world, fuck Reddit and don't let any one of these people in who don't care about why the FOSS community wants decentralisation.

They loved to ban people for being critical of Biden or posting things negative of biden. To the point they'd just start making up rules to justify the bans when questioned.

Now one of their top mods just removes people for questioning him on Kamala

Tbh that's why I personally left Reddit. And while I had very watered down ideas of socialism (social democracy), I was far enough left my ex from the global south used to tell everyone I'm a socialista, back in the early aughts. Not in a malicious way, though.

Nazi bar syndrome strikes again

[–] MizuTama@hexbear.net 52 points 22 hours ago (1 children)

Lemmy world is more right wing than reddit

1>1

Most of world could just be a multireddit of r/worldnews and r/politics. Reddit has been doing all the same but is a bit better at dressing it in respectability politics imo and doesn't have commies on the brain as often. Usually, the commies arguing on that site aren't outright saying it and a lib wouldn't recognize them without the giant "I'm a commie" sign instances suffixes give. I saw two people arguing with some chuds and then went into a digression about the contradictions of capitalism but without the "That's a commie" sign no one noticed they were discussing theory.

Reddit was populated for a while before the crisis of liberalism really sunk in. It wasn't a website with a particular politics beyond the mainstream (biased towards white computer touchers obviously). It operates under a corporate media model which aims to be unoffensive (to potential advertisers and investors, specifically). The crop of alternative social media platforms which have launched since 2017 are a completely different breed. In the hands of liberals, they are operated under the assumption that an epistemological crisis is what's fueling the global turn towards fascism. In an effort to combat this epistemological crisis, they have circled their wagons around the liberal institutions which are supposed to be responsible for safeguarding and delivering the truth - academia and journalism, as well as the institutions of "democracy," which the "truth" is meant to sustain.

They operate under the mindset that liberal democracy is hanging on by a thread, and that any criticism (or worse! Lack of respect) of these institutions undermines them, and undermines liberal democracy itself. With the enemies at the gate, any setback for the US is a setback for democracy. The scandalous positions (and omissions) of the Papers Of Record must be embraced uncritically, because if people lose faith in "journalism," disinformation prevails. The end result is places like lemmy.world, where liberals find much more safety and comfort in naked imperialism than they do in a thorough examination of the manifold chronic institutional failures which led us to where we are today.

While Reddit may be irredeemable on the whole, it has the potential to surprise you occasionally. It is different from these new platforms where the userbase is much more ideologically self-selected, and where dissidents are accurately identified as enemies, rather than a potential marketing category for vendors advertising Che Guevara t-shirts.

I realize this comment is too late for a lot of people to still see, but I have to add something about reddit, unless we fall into the trap of erasing some of its terrible history because they have been trying to memoryhole it as hard as possible.

CW: Pedophiles, sexual violence

It wasn't a website with a particular politics beyond the mainstream (biased towards white computer touchers obviously).

I don't think this is entirely true. In the early stages of reddit it was already more aligned with the kind of libertarian freeze-peach brainworms to the point that I remember normie liberals and people on older sites (including fucking 4chan) were oftentimes repulsed by it.

Initially the main thing reddit was doing to set itself apart from other sites was to not "censor" communities like r/jailbait and various reddits dedicated to taking upskirt creepshots. The former was a community dedicated to sexualising actual, real-life, children and to post images and videos of them for people to masturbate to.

Reddit did eventually cave and remove the very fucking worst shit on it and then pivoted hard to being the inoffensive. investor-friendly site for white keyboard touchers as you said, but I don't think the truly awful shit they started out with should be forgotten either.
