But nuclear missile silos are already capable of launching missiles, that's the whole point.

That's the thing that's got me wondering what the problem could be here. Oh no, they might switch-out their ICBM launch rockets and use the old ones for boosters to get other payloads to orbit? THE HORROR

I wonder how much America's defense against Iran's ballistic missiles informed China's calculus here.

Counter-missiles aren't useful for stopping a first strike, because they're more expensive per missile, and have a limited efficiency. However, in the event of a suprise first strike, say by stealth bombers, the counter-missiles only have to shoot down the ones that didn't get hit in the first strike. That was the logic behind Reagan's Starwars.

So the logic to defend against that is you either need a hair trigger that the enemy knows they can't do a first strike without hundreds of missiles launching (this is fucking insane), you need launch sites the enemy knows exist, but not where (submarines, bombers), or you need a more launch sites than the enemy can hit.

Any time I hear a bunch of "Country X is about to start a war" stories, it's usually on the eve of the US invading someone new.

Nice to see China is just like everyone else.

We'll see if The US is dumb enough to get into an outright shooting war.

But we're already doing pissing contest proxy wars in the Philippines and Myanmar.

Don't both the US and China support the PH govt?

I know nothing about the situation in myanmar

Don’t both the US and China support the PH govt?

No.

I kinda assume China fears being seen as supporting the guerillas if they don't support PH and India's efforts against them.

We’re talking about China.

[–] MachineFab812@discuss.tchncs.de 1 points 1 month ago (1 children)

... and now we're talking about your previous comment getting more positive traction than it deserved. Seriously though, you don't think the meddling in Oceania involves China? I gotta see this...

[–] kibblebits@quokk.au 2 points 1 month ago (1 children)

You aren’t involved. Or are you an alt?

[–] MachineFab812@discuss.tchncs.de 1 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Real serious reply right there. I don't have time for your non-sense, let alone to engage with it by way of an alt. This Orange man method of confession-by-way-of-accussation is pathetic.

[–] kibblebits@quokk.au 1 points 1 month ago

Don’t even know what you’re talking about. If you don’t have time for it. Prove it by going away.
