Rules (2024-08-30)

  1. This is an English-language community. Comments should be in English. Posts can link to non-English news sources when providing a full-text translation in the post description. Automated translations are fine, as long as they don't overly distort the content.
  2. No links to misinformation or commercial advertising. When you post outdated/historic articles, add the year of publication to the post title. Infographics must include a source and a year of creation; if possible, also provide a link to the source.
  3. Be kind to each other, and argue in good faith. Don't post direct insults nor disrespectful and condescending comments. Don't troll nor incite hatred. Don't look for novel argumentation strategies at Wikipedia's List of fallacies.
  4. No bigotry, sexism, racism, antisemitism, islamophobia, dehumanization of minorities, or glorification of National Socialism. We follow German law; don't question the statehood of Israel.
  5. Be the signal, not the noise: Strive to post insightful comments. Add "/s" when you're being sarcastic (and don't use it to break rule no. 3).
  6. If you link to paywalled information, please provide also a link to a freely available archived version. Alternatively, try to find a different source.
  7. Light-hearted content, memes, and posts about your European everyday belong in other communities.
  8. Don't evade bans. If we notice ban evasion, that will result in a permanent ban for all the accounts we can associate with you.
  9. No posts linking to speculative reporting about ongoing events with unclear backgrounds. Please wait at least 12 hours. (E.g., do not post breathless reporting on an ongoing terror attack.)
  10. Always provide context with posts: Don't post uncontextualized images or videos, and don't start discussions without giving some context first.

(This list may get expanded as necessary.)

Posts that link to the following sources will be removed

Unless they're the only sources, please also avoid The Sun, Daily Mail, any "thinktank" type organization, and non-Lemmy social media (incl. Substack). Don't link to Twitter directly, instead use xcancel.com. For Reddit, use old:reddit:com

(Lists may get expanded as necessary.)

Ban lengths, etc.

We will use some leeway to decide whether to remove a comment.

If need be, there are also bans: 3 days for lighter offenses, 7 or 14 days for bigger offenses, and permanent bans for people who don't show any willingness to participate productively. If we think the ban reason is obvious, we may not specifically write to you.

If you want to protest a removal or ban, feel free to write privately to the admin that applied the rule (check modlog first to find who was it.)

Paraphrasing Trump: the tax just got 10% higher

[–] tanteregenbogen@piefed.eurocomsocial.de 67 points 1 day ago (4 children)

US is already in recession. Is Trump willing to sacrifice the economy over a fair tax?

Is Trump willing to sacrifice the economy over a fair tax?

Trump is senile and has no grasp on reality.

[–] somethingsnappy@lemmy.world 6 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I have a new theory. He thinks that 100% tariff means the EU can't sell anything to the US. It makes more sense than if he understood what a tariff is.

[–] Malyca@lemmy.zip 4 points 1 day ago (1 children)

He doesn't understand still. With an economics degree from an ivy league university.

[–] corsicanguppy@lemmy.ca 3 points 19 hours ago

Ohhhh, you think he earned that by passing courses? I suspect someone ghost-wrote his assignments and exams.

[–] Tar_alcaran@sh.itjust.works 26 points 1 day ago (1 children)

No, he has no idea what's going on.

He's willing to sacrifice the US economy over a perceived slight against his property though.

This. An (aspiring) dictator doesn't care so much about the interests of the country as much as about concentrating power. For every crisis that affects the elites, they will recalculate their risks and seek protection wherever they can find it. And it often is close to the dictator that caused the crisis.

He’s willing to burn the USA to the ground over insider trading. This stunt too will cost the US economy dearly but earn the Trump family a nice sum so he doesnβ€˜t care.

It's absolutely ridiculous that someone would threaten to change a tariff regime after negotiating one a few month ago. What's the point of any agreement with this guy if it's null and void the moment he changes his mind?

That said (loudly), we need more European digital solution that don't suck like their American counterparts. Maybe use the money from the digital tax to fund the development and deployment of alternatives to Facebook, X, WhatsApp, Amazon, Google, etc.

[–] ranzispa@mander.xyz 1 points 16 hours ago

To be fair, I just discovered that SMS is now super cool with the added RCS functionality. It feels like an already functional WhatsApp alternative.

I'm now using normal messages with most of my contacts, this is perfect since all of them already have a phone number.

The only problem is that I did not find a Foss app which supports this.

I sincerely hope this is what Europe does. Tech is funding fascism around the world, including Europe. If you continue to do nothing, they will continue to turn your people into savage fascists one moron at a time. That's why right wing nationalists parties keep gaining support all over Europe. They're using social media, the rest of the internet and what media they control to do this and they control enough. Especially with the help of Israel. Europe must find alternatives and fast.

[–] Ooops@feddit.org 2 points 1 day ago

Or don't build an alternative EU online cesspool but instead invest the money in education...

[–] Kissaki@feddit.org 1 points 1 day ago

The deal is already past either way. Court ordered their Tarriffs illegal. Trump declared 30% on all countries through a different law justification. EU said: Then our WIP deal is no better than default - we're done negotiating until the US can present definite and persistent terms.

Trump has been shifting tariffs willy-nilly since the beginning. By now, every country knows there's no certainty with any Trump deals.

Europe has been switching away from US tech, and focusing on an open-source approach instead. I don't think they'll implement their own social network - that's not a necessary state asset. But they've funded open-source projects that are alternatives. IIRC Lemmy has received funding as well - I may mix up funding collections though.

Ding ding ding, this, there is no use in negotiating with the Orange Turd. It’s useless as he just tramples all over a deal like a petulant child if he doesn’t get his way in future deals. He’s a total imbecile.

I totally agree Europe and Canada, need to work harder on developing our own systems. Current U.S. based search engines are terrible right now.

Tuesday is only three nights away

But please go on, do it, make the Americans pay. Nothing as bad for business as a buyer that threatens again and again, changes his mind on every whim and backs out. No one needs shit like that, it’s just not worth it.

[–] officermike@lemmy.world 20 points 1 day ago

Hey President Dipshit, the Supreme Court already decided you couldn't unilaterally impose tariffs on individual countries. Did you forget? Did the dementia take that memory away from you?

[–] sniggleboots 22 points 1 day ago

Just do it already, orange buffoon.

[–] B0rax@feddit.org 8 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Oh is someone throwing a tantrum?

Someone needs a diaper change.

[–] stoicEuropean@lemmy.ml 6 points 1 day ago (1 children)

It's worth remembering the direct quotes of Jeffrey Epstein a out DJT.

  • "none as bad as trump"
  • "not one decent cell in his body"
  • "the worst person I've ever known"
  • "dangerous"

Just imagine having the power of a POTUS, just to metaphorically burn the whole place down, probably while even thinking you are on the winning side. I'd pity him, if he wasnt such a PoS.

[–] osanna@lemmy.vg 1 points 1 day ago

It’d be fucking hilarious if it wasn’t so disastrous to humanity.

[–] jojo@piefed.social 6 points 1 day ago

Another day, another tariff...

[–] fox2263@lemmy.world 5 points 1 day ago

β€œDon’t tariff me I’ll tariff you!!!

Cancelling the digital tax worked out well for Canada, right?

He learned his lesson. Right, Susan??

Ugh, useless trade war again, hurting everyone involved

Donnie, you’re out of your element.
