Two weeks ago, Adams held a town hall in Williamsburg where numerous members of the neighborhood’s Hasidic community criticized the bike lane. They cited a viral video where a person riding an e-bike crashed into a young child who dashed into the bike lane from a double parked car.

An online petition against the redesigned bike lane titled “DOT: Please Stop the Murder of our Children” has more than 3,000 signatures.

After reading the article and watching the video of the child who was hit by a cyclist, it seems that the real problem is the on-street parking.

Not surprising, since on-street parking, legal or otherwise, creates a significant challenge and conflict for all road users.

The NIMBYs and planners are idiots for not acknowledging that fact.

Stop the Murder of our Children

so typical American politics then

Imagine if a kid getting hit by a car was enough to get cars removed from the street it happened on.

Cites an event from a car parked illegally. Brilliant.

Users of NYC Protected Bike Lane orders removal of Mayor Adams

They cited a viral video where a person riding an e-bike crashed into a young child who dashed into the bike lane from a double parked car.

So the problem is the bike lane? Not the illegally parked car. Not the unsupervised child running into traffic. Not the other cars which are much heavier and faster and far more deadly than bikes which frequently hit pedestrians. Not even the cyclist who would probably still be in the lane of traffic even without a bike lane. No, it's the lane that's the problem.

I mean we see this all the time with cars when they hit people. Cities are always removing the street as a response. They realize hey this isn't a safe place for cars so lets get rid of them from this area. So at least they are consistent.

Wow, get rid of cars on that street too then.

Get rid of fucking Adams. Political monstrosity.

[–] IllNess@infosec.pub 14 points 1 day ago

I agree. Turn the entire block pedestrian only. People can walk their bikes to the next bike lane.

Children are protected from bikes and cars!

Adams is a turd and I hope he rots somewhere out of sight and removed from power.

[–] noxypaws@pawb.social 24 points 1 day ago

There should be a protest that blocks all attempts to remove a protected bike lane. No public works unions should stand for it.

Fucking ridiculous.

Are these people actually that dumb, or are they all just pretending?

Thanks, that definitely clears up what kind of stupidity is going on here.

Kid vs Car -> Kid's fault Kid vs Bike -> Bike's fault...

[–] stephen01king@lemmy.zip 11 points 1 day ago

They're pretending so they have a reason to feel outraged.

[–] themeatbridge@lemmy.world 23 points 1 day ago

They're pretending to be pretending to be stupid.

Since when does the injury of a single child warrant the removal of an entire system?

~~/s~~

[–] BradleyUffner@lemmy.world 3 points 12 hours ago

When they are already looking for an excuse to do it.

[–] Ioughttamow@fedia.io 24 points 1 day ago

From my understanding, you hurt enough kids and you get to be president

[–] renamon_silver@lemmy.wtf 4 points 1 day ago

Not when you are driving a car

[–] DrawingMapsNR@lemmy.world 19 points 1 day ago

This mayor is so obviously corrupt it's funny but not at the same time because of his terrible decisions.

[–] sicco@feddit.nl 13 points 1 day ago

So where is the petition to keep the bikelane?

[–] the_q@lemmy.zip 3 points 1 day ago

Did the child die?
