For some reason you're no longer allowed to wear that costume in the metro. It's traditional dammit!

Joulupukki

Estonia

That's Finnish lol, in Estonia it'd be called Jõulusokk (sokk meaning both sock and stag), never seen anyone don the costume in the parts of the country I've lived in, but folk costumes differ by region even in our tiny country.

Most folk costumes are very different from this though.

Anyone have context for the purpose or use of these costumes? They seem very intricate and some are more nightmare material (at least to me)

It's probably hard to say with a lot of them, because Christianity rebranded a lot of ancient traditions... Like Christmas and Easter.

Lots of weird costumes and traditions with them wearing them are rooted in pagan traditions.

Check out the Julebukk for example

I was thinking some of these look like ghillie suits used by the military, but TIL from Wikipedia that those may actually have a folk origin:

The term ghillie suit may be a reference to the Ghillie Dhu, an earth spirit in Scottish mythology clothed in leaves and moss.

Portugal and whatever the fuck this is
