Rules (2024-08-30)

  1. This is an English-language community. Comments should be in English. Posts can link to non-English news sources when providing a full-text translation in the post description. Automated translations are fine, as long as they don't overly distort the content.
  2. No links to misinformation or commercial advertising. When you post outdated/historic articles, add the year of publication to the post title. Infographics must include a source and a year of creation; if possible, also provide a link to the source.
  3. Be kind to each other, and argue in good faith. Don't post direct insults nor disrespectful and condescending comments. Don't troll nor incite hatred. Don't look for novel argumentation strategies at Wikipedia's List of fallacies.
  4. No bigotry, sexism, racism, antisemitism, islamophobia, dehumanization of minorities, or glorification of National Socialism. We follow German law; don't question the statehood of Israel.
  5. Be the signal, not the noise: Strive to post insightful comments. Add "/s" when you're being sarcastic (and don't use it to break rule no. 3).
  6. If you link to paywalled information, please provide also a link to a freely available archived version. Alternatively, try to find a different source.
  7. Light-hearted content, memes, and posts about your European everyday belong in other communities.
  8. Don't evade bans. If we notice ban evasion, that will result in a permanent ban for all the accounts we can associate with you.
  9. No posts linking to speculative reporting about ongoing events with unclear backgrounds. Please wait at least 12 hours. (E.g., do not post breathless reporting on an ongoing terror attack.)
  10. Always provide context with posts: Don't post uncontextualized images or videos, and don't start discussions without giving some context first.

(This list may get expanded as necessary.)

Posts that link to the following sources will be removed

Unless they're the only sources, please also avoid The Sun, Daily Mail, any "thinktank" type organization, and non-Lemmy social media (incl. Substack). Don't link to Twitter directly, instead use xcancel.com. For Reddit, use old:reddit:com

(Lists may get expanded as necessary.)

Ban lengths, etc.

We will use some leeway to decide whether to remove a comment.

If need be, there are also bans: 3 days for lighter offenses, 7 or 14 days for bigger offenses, and permanent bans for people who don't show any willingness to participate productively. If we think the ban reason is obvious, we may not specifically write to you.

If you want to protest a removal or ban, feel free to write privately to the admin that applied the rule (check modlog first to find who was it.)

Berlin’s backing for Israel in the current context has irrevocably ruined Germany’s international standing.

At the same time, as a result of Germany’s neoliberal restructuring, processes of de-democratisation have been ongoing for years.

The deliberate erosion of democracy has paved the way not only for the selective application of international law, but also for the restriction of fundamental rights within Germany itself.

The German population is firmly against their country’s participation in the extermination of the Palestinian people. In a recent poll, 73 percent said they had a negative view of Israel, while 80 percent have rejected further weapons exports to Israel. Despite this, German arms export licenses to Israel have surged, enabling the state to continue committing war crimes.

While the German government’s blatant disregard for the will of its own people already points to a process of de-democratisation, this is exacerbated by domestic restrictions on fundamental rights, including freedom of assembly, freedom of opinion and speech, and academic freedom, alongside violations of due process - all in the service of the Zionist slaughterers.

Speaking as a europhile, I am begrudgingly beginning to accept the EU project is cooked. We are being ruled by the billionaire Epstein-class whether we want to admit it or not. The voting public have the means to get rid of these tools and they have to go.

[–] matlag@sh.itjust.works 3 points 2 hours ago

Yep. The UK exited under far-right influence. Italy has already elected fascist. France is nearing the end of 10 years of neo-liberalism, that of course includes a "fuck what the people wants" attitude and oligarchy's controlled medias. The far-right candidate is the favorite for next year's presidential election.

At the EU level, we're not there yet, but far-right is now well represented. It just drags a bit vs the nations.

Oligarchs wants the EU dead. They're getting there.

Good that you see it. You’re in the same trouble America is in. They are trying to divide the working classes of the world and eu leadership is in on it just as much as us leadership (and more).

Germany Will Defend Israel Against South Africa's Gaza Genocide Claim at ICJ - Business Insider

Jan 13, 2024 is when the "social democrats" (=liberals) and greens in Germany became guilty of aiding the genocide in Gaza and became unelectable. No wonder that the conservatives are joining the fray. And the democratic socialists aren't much better.

Considering where the money is going, I wouldn't feel bad about not ratting out a German for committing tax fraud.

[–] Jimbel@lemmy.world 17 points 1 day ago (6 children)

Why is the german government doing this?

[–] Asfalttikyntaja@sopuli.xyz 11 points 20 hours ago

Because of WWII hangover. The pendulum has swung to the other extreme.

[–] jenesaisquoi@feddit.org 20 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Isn't it obvious? Because they feel they have a debt towards Jewish people and the state of Israel that can never be repaid

[–] architect@thelemmy.club 2 points 2 hours ago

Yea right.

More like pedophiles of a feather flock together.

We don't do the "white" categorisation in Europe. They are Germans.

[–] 100_kg_90_de_belin@feddit.it 2 points 18 hours ago

Helping Israel kill brown people will make everybody see how bad the Jews really are: 4D nazism

[–] lemmelemmy@feddit.org 2 points 18 hours ago

Because they don’t like brown people. Simple as.

[–] FE80@lemmy.world 10 points 1 day ago

Overcompensation.

[–] Bob@feddit.org 2 points 19 hours ago

Mostly money and intelligence sharing?

[–] BigShammy80@feddit.org 43 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Israel are murderes and nothing else. As a german i'm ashamed of my government!

[–] Jimbel@lemmy.world 10 points 1 day ago

I am a german and i am also ashamed. Fuck fascism. Fuck Netanjahu.

[–] minorkeys@sh.itjust.works 25 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (1 children)

They're much more than murders, they are mass murderers.

[–] jenesaisquoi@feddit.org 4 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Indeed. It is called faschism.

Genocide actually, ofc certain types of thinking lead to it though.

[–] bandanawearingbanana@lemmy.world 15 points 1 day ago (1 children)

No surprise here, they are criminals too. Embezzling funds meant for roads and infrastructure to fund pensions as well as being openly corrupt.

They're just arseholes who have no real economic agenda except filling their own poket.

[–] jenesaisquoi@feddit.org 7 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Germany is more than the current CDU government. Chancellor Merz is the most unpopular chancellor ever in the history of the federal republic.

[–] GardenGeek 4 points 19 hours ago (1 children)

Before you praise the German public let's wait who's the next, and possibly last, chancellor. Since WWII Germany has a strong habit of copying the US.

[–] jenesaisquoi@feddit.org 2 points 9 hours ago (2 children)

Both countries are suffering from the unmitigated effects of a decade-long propaganda campaign paid for and orchestrated by Russia.

It would be easy to stop it: make social networks take responsibility, the same way normal media does. But the rich do not wish it, so it does not happen.

What I mean to say is that yes it is the gullible idiot portion of the respective populations voting for the fascists, but they're not the real cause. Blame the con men, not the conned.

[–] GardenGeek 2 points 7 hours ago* (last edited 7 hours ago)

Had similat thoughts when reading about the far right polling in Australis. The author asked what has changed... well we have a facist regime on the rise in the US which incidentally happens to own the major social media plattforms and messengers used by the majority of citizens.

[–] plyth@feddit.org 1 points 7 hours ago* (last edited 7 hours ago) (1 children)

Maybe it's too blunt but it's very likely that you fell for propaganda. Think about who owns the algorithms.

[–] jenesaisquoi@feddit.org 2 points 4 hours ago (1 children)

FB has discovered a long time ago that no other reaction generates as much engagement as outrage. The propagandists have realised this, and are using it, very successfully.

You're right, it doesn't have to be this way - that's what I meant by forcing the social media companies to take responsibility.

[–] plyth@feddit.org 3 points 3 hours ago (1 children)

Don't you think they already cooperate and stifle Russian content as much as possible? In my opinion, social media promotes as much as possible what the American elite wants.

[–] jenesaisquoi@feddit.org 1 points 3 hours ago* (last edited 3 hours ago)

It doesn't seem like it, especially since Russia supports the current leader of the US government.

In any case, I don't care what the companies are doing of their own accord. They must be compelled by, and regularly and transparently audited by, a law.

and i thought that Auschwitz had ruined Germany's international standing.

[–] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 16 points 1 day ago (2 children)

looks like someone has krompromat on merz or his government.

[–] HieroProtagonist@feddit.org 14 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I think "matching geopolitical interests" is a better fitting reason.

[–] distal@lemmy.ml 3 points 19 hours ago

The same exists in Australia

We’re actually holding a RC into antisemitism, it’s that bad

Around 80-85% of us disapprove of Zionist cunts but the federal government will not hear us of course.

Australia is spiralling down the drain as well with all this shit. I have a genuine concern for our sovereignty, if it exists at all.
