OK, so why is Anthropic, an AI company itself, posting this? I mean, interesting story, but I have this feeling that the reason they're posting this might be more interesting.

Even before the arrival of ChatGPT, Ashley Madison, for example, was using bots to catfish their users. So it's definitely not a new thing coming from Western corporations.

Both creepy and unethical. Way to go.
But also perhaps not very effective, as they only averaged 5 interactions per agent. Not so much that, even for a test project, it seems like these llm agents must not have been very good.
Chatbots have been on dating sites for a long time I should add. Call them what you will, but llm's shouldn't be called AI as far as I'm concerned.
Yesterday I heard someone who insisted that LLMs were not artificial intelligence and instead suggested the term synthetic intelligence. I get the subtle difference, but what's the point?
I like the synthetic. "Synthetic Language Response" I think is a good descriptor.
The goal is to respond to a query with grammatically correct grammar and adherence to the topic. That seems to work quite well.
"Correct responses"; I've never seen that on the packaging.
I reject any name that includes intelligence. It's not that, they don't think, they work differently.
Many people could make better arguments o this than I, I am not a tech guy. But basically people that know this subject in detail say that it's not thinking, it's not reasoning, it's choosing the most popular response from the bank of responses it holds, and as such, will never be able to get rid of hallucinations as such.
It's historical. Pathfinders are AI for example. It's just an acronym for computer doing "brain work".
I mean if you're curious about why we call it that.
Nevertheless I am calling it LLMs and you all should too. Because whatever computer programmers call it, the public envisions something different that llm's are not when they hear AI.
I'm so glad I finished figuring myself out, more or less, RIGHT before this horseshit took off.
Dating apps have been using chatbots for probably two decades now at least.
If you aren't getting responses, they have a chatbot chat with you a bit then trail the conversation off to keep you interested.
Having the government run dating is just dystopian though in any case. Of course so is letting for profit companies run it apparently.
2026 equivalent of the chat farms they used to use in the before time to pray on lonely people.
They’d advertise at 2am and peolple would call and think they’re talking to the one person but really some chat farm.
