after 15 years, iOS has finally caught up with all the main android features, such as

  • very mid ui design
  • kinda floaty feeling
  • unpolished vibe android itself has progressed little, although it is rapidly achieving feature parity with iOS on "locked down user hostility". overall both ecosystems look very appealing, energetic, and healthy, for shareholders

I prefer Android's UI design, and it feels pretty polished to me. I'm not sure what they mean by "floaty feeling" though.

Fully agree on the recent user / dev locked down hostility.

    I'm done with android (And surely never touched crapple to begin with).

    I watched it slowly become "the cheaper iOS" and Samsung becoming "the android of apple".

    But the recent final proverbial nail was their most recent lockdown. Fuck you google. Fuck you since you dropped "don't be evil" to become Satan itself. At least apple never tried to appear "open".

    "just". If you have no problem with being treated like a child, on your own device, then yes. "Just 24hrs". And btw...that's 24hrs, FOR NOW. Testing if the resistance is even worth considering (which it won't be).

    Being treated like a child is subjective, however. And, superuser features are really not for everyone. Anyways, the best way to fight for this is being loud. The only reason Google gave the 24 hour unblock anyway was due to the community. And, if another person chooses Apple, let them be. Google should know what the differentiating factor Android has and blur the difference then just go buy an iPhone.

    Not everyone loves leaving the house, yet you would probably prefer if you always could. Should you decide to do so. It's your house after all. You'd probably feel like a grounded kid if police wouldn't allow you to step outside.

    I don't share your optimism. Being loud is irrelevant if you're a small minority and the majority doesn't care or doesn't even see a problem here (or where it will inevitably lead to).

    Yes, the reason to go Apple was never better. Even for an Apple-hater like me. The said differentiating factor diminishes...

    Leaving the house is a long shot for a comparison. The average person can close any app they want. Maybe a better comparison is not being allowed to install your air conditioner on your own and being required by your Home Association to install it through their prescribed partner. Not everyone wants to install their air conditioner on their own. In phone speak, most people only care now if they can youtube, FB, instagram, or tiktok.

    I find the analogy very fitting. Both are devices that get locked down and may not leave. Literally.

    And just because the broad majority is clueless of something doesn't mean it shall be locked down harder. If you're the usual ignorant facebooker, a hidden key to always leave your house (if you're one of those very few that like to venture beyond your own garden) would suffice to "protect" the flock from the evil outside. You don't have to destroy all locks slowly one by one....

    Imagine windows did the same and PCs would ship without admin-pwd and the ability to install another OS. And only win-store'd be the place to install stuff. Sounds totally absurd, because win can't (yet) do this.

    I don't understand how leaving becomes an analogy wherein the goal of being a superuser is not to leave the platform but to customize the platform. So you don't want developer verification because you want people to be able to.. leave?

    Leaving the walled garden that is becoming play store. Like Apple already did. Leaving here means being able to go beyond the confines of said store. Maybe the analogy to a prison is better than your home. You get everything you need and don't need to care for anything ever. Until you one day wanna go outside.

    If it was for google, there'd already be no option to do anything you need control for. It's not only the locked store. I can't backup my stuff unless I gift it to google. I can't control my own device in my own apps reliably anymore, I have no authority in the lock screen and its settings, and a million things more.

    Of course, clueless people need to be protected, all fine. But why not an option like "I know what I'm doing, I don't need hand holding, thanks". Enable it, acknowledge another 3 big warnings that would scare away anyone mistakenly ending up there, and fine. Everyone's happy. They don't do that, that says everything.

    I really don't know how to move forward with this. The time delay is useful so a clueless user will have enough time to think about something that they would do before actually doing it. Let's say they won't easily install a sketchy app while drunk, etc. Remember that hackers rarely hack, they just socially engineer. For power users, you just need to wait for the 24 hour time frame. If it is a problem, you can set it up now so you no longer have to think about it. Now, if you are scared about Google removing the option, I think you have enough time to prepare yourself so it wouldn't have much of an impact when the time comes as it will not be that soon. It can also be delayed further by increasing pressure from the users just like how I said earlier that people can be loud about it or the minority can spread awareness so the minority becomes a majority. Because other than this, I really don't know what else we can do that is feasible for a regular individual.

    Yes, we can have "alternatives" but do take note there are pros and cons to those alternatives one of which Google and Apple can bring 0-day fixes much faster than the alternatives (in this case, you have to choose between superuser control and security). For an average person, do you think self-custody is worth their time with increasing chances of finding 0-day bugs because of how good AIs have become? I have taken notes of the recent bitcoin hacking and it seems I would rather buy a bitcoin ETF because the self-custody hardware wallets were actually easy to hack. And, if we will talk about this further, I am curious, what superuser functionality is currently hindered right now with the developer verification thing that you really need to use?

    Remember that this is just the beginning. The option will sooner or later be removed for good. I have no doubt about that. So sticking with them is wasting precious time for me.

    I already did the moment i heard of that. I was fed up with google anyway, but this was the proverbial nail. I have one dummy-phone with a fake-account for android-auto, and one phone with a fake-account for banking (sadly they ALL need an app and i need them all). My phone currently is google-free and the moment it dies, I'll get whatever non-google there is at this time then. If the camera of that one sucks, I'll get a DSLR, like back in the days. At home google is already blocked for years now. Including Microsoft and the other major US-american shitlords. Internet is a minefield of shit, but that's what it is. I've enjoyed the greatest time with the internet, and can be happy i was so privileged.

    Might be true, but also totally irrelevant. As G+A are 99,99999% of target demographics of hacking/phishing/spamming. Not the 5 users globally with PostmarketOS or the other 3 folks with lineageos or whatnot. Noone cares about those.

    And here I am, still having my notebook from back when Bitcoin started :-) Yeah sure, i get you. But all arguments aside, it should simply be the user's choice. Live willingly in a totally protected golden garden if you want, but please give me the option to just unlock it and live with "all the risk". I'm >40yrs IT-freak now, I only ever had ONE virus-incident, and it was my own fault and it did not harm. Besides that I only managed to have an archive of virii that came by. This fearmongering is only really valid for clueless people who browser piracy, porn or click on every shit they find on social media. I don't even use any social-media :)

    I instantly stopped caring to be honest. They made their way clear, I'm gone. The same I said bye to Huawei back then when they wanted to MAIL THEM AND ASK for an unlock-key to your own expensive hardware. Never bothered them again. I have no other power in my control than to vote by wallet. Even if it's as insignificant as it is right now. At least I'm not part of it. Knowing what is wrong and still partaking in it, is embracing it. Goes for ethics, goes for "simple" things like this too. In my book at least.

    Also, my personal problem with this is: No company will get my personal info for free. And I surely won't pay google to have it just so I'm allowed to install my own apps on my own damn phone. Would you accept this on your PC? Even Crapple lets you install apps freely on their MACs.

    I understand now and our age gap is probably the reason we have different preferences. And I think it's fine. I understand your perspective and admire your principles. Living in this generation just sucks right now that it is almost required to have accounts on big tech unless you are really set for life. I understand the risks to it and I adjust so that I don't put too much reliance, so for now there is no need to worry about that.

    Sorry man, I really feel that. the newer generations really have a lot of dicks to suck that life offers, instead of lemons :-( And I totally don't envy you at all. The internet did a lot of awesome things, but it also made the world a much more worse place to be (unless you're very rich, "normal rich" doesn't even cut it anymore).

    And yes, you probably HAVE to have stupid accounts on all the stupid ass sites noone ever really wanted. And even pay for that...

    iOS still doesn't allow multi-window and pop up app view or even the latest bubble apps on Android unless you pay for the iPhone Duo or get an iPad.

    I haven't used an iPhone since the first one, can anyone confirm if file navigation in iPhone has reached the fever dream abomination of file navigation, management and search that Android has achieved?
