    It's scary how many people think data centers are just for AI. Datacenters power the web, this site is hosted on one. But the mob mentality just wants to torch all of them naively.

    Like I'm against all the unnecessary build out, but there's no sense in trying to burn down the ones that already exist.

    Strawman. No ones advocating for destroying existing web infrastructure. It's clear what this is about.

    Your concern is justified, and you should target it squarely and solely at the people who build the LLMs and mislead the public about them by obfuscating what "AI" they actually provide.

    AWS, Azure, and GCP had plenty of capacity 6 years ago for the entire "web" that they ran, now all of a sudden they need 20x the capacity.

    AI requires insanely power hungry GPUs and massive cooling infrastructure.

    It's not exactly rocket science to see what happened.

    If a web site dies because a dc got torched, that's bad redundancy architecture and DR plan. 😄 I'm considering transferring some domains to AliBaba Cloud. I don't think any bombs or arson would be befalling those dcs anytime soon.

    Data Centers in mainstream media means hyperscalers. It's true some of this hate is incidentally redirected towards small data centers but it's a negligible problem at the moment.
