I am from Austria, "not everything was bad under hitler" was said a LOT by the older generations.
I don't think a single individual viewpoint is giving a great picture about the overall situation of a country.
I also don't see why people think they have to pick countries or ideologies like sportsteams. Just look at it with an open mind and take the good parts as inspiration and the bad parts as a warning.
American History doesn't exactly align with the rest of the world's history.
We just kinda retcon it to make it fit the capitalist agenda.

Okay sure I'm not from the former ussr, just from the former eastern block, and it may be most older people you know, but it's certainly not most older people, at least over here.
