"I'm sitting at Miami airport, I just arrived from Havana. Later tonight I'll be giving my mother some medication to help with her dementia, probably Alzheimer's, which she was diagnosed with in June. I've brought a 48-week supply of NeuralCIM, a new medication produced and distributed only in Cuba."
The American singer-songwriter and activist Ben Grosscup posted it on social media last Thursday, after spending two weeks on the island, interviewing doctors and scientists about how the drug developed by the Center for Molecular Immunology works, and the details of its manufacture and distribution.
"I've been trying to understand how Cuba is in such a position to help my family in such a powerful way. This medication holds extraordinary promise for stabilizing, and in many cases improving, cognitive test scores for patients with dementia."
The artist said his trip confronted him with the "heartbreaking and horrific" ways his government is harming the Cuban people by imposing a brutal economic blockade. "Along the way, I've made some incredible friends. Cuba, I love you," he said.
After her mother's diagnosis, Grosscup investigated and found that the medications available in the United States do not stop or reverse the progression of this degenerative neurological disease.
At the time, he posted: “I always expected sadness and devastation for families after this diagnosis. But my research this summer on NeuralCIM, a Cuban drug marketed earlier this year, has left me with hope.”
The artist, after learning of the promising results of clinical trials with patients suffering from mild to moderate dementia, showing no side effects, wondered: Why aren't advances like NeuralCIM being promoted in the US? Why aren't clinical trials being conducted in the US now, and why aren't they moving as quickly as possible to make this treatment available to the millions of families suffering today?
“Part of the problem is geopolitics,” he asserted, referring to the devastating effects of the blockade and the measures promoted by the Trump administration. “Entrenched corporate interests are another obstacle to the distribution of NeuralCIM in the US,” he added.
"I have been an activist against the US economic war," he said, "but I never thought that my own mother's well-being depended on the ingenuity and hospitality of the nation that my government was trying to destroy."
"Unlike the U.S. healthcare model, the socialist values at the heart of the Cuban system are about making the population healthier, not enriching a few," the singer-songwriter noted.
Grosscup added that he has learned a great deal about Cuba in a short time. "I've been documenting every step of the process I followed, and I'm eager to share what I know," he said, expressing his intention to discuss the medication with anyone who contacts him and to offer several talks in the future.
According to its creators, NeuralCIM's functions include reducing inflammation, promoting the increase of natural neuroprotective substances in the body, and decreasing other substances that are toxic.
The natural progression of Alzheimer's disease is towards worsening in more than 70% of patients; and the results derived from clinical trials achieved that more than 60% of patients are among the categories of improvement and stability, in terms of orientation, memory, language, ability to plan and execute, and calculation.
