There is exactly one place where I want ai: in its browser window that's directed at the service of my choice (ideally something self hosted).

I don't want an ai sidebar.

I don't want ai search summaries.

I don't want ai assisted shopping.

I don't want ai snooping in my photo gallery.

I don't want ai in my emails.

And I don't want to watch other people's slop. I can prompt my own, fuck off.

This has been part 3 of a series of comments on my nuanced opinion regarding ai.

There is always a good argument for symplicity and AI is not simple and has uncertain security.

Similar thing with IDEs and editors when coding. I have always prefered an editor except when the IDE does exactly what I want which is often not the case.

AI definitely loves to over-engineer things but I've had lots of success with the latest models just telling them not to. Also I do simplification passes afterwards telling them to find anything that can be simplified or YAGNI.

I guess the tend to over-engineer is probably because the benchmarks don't care about simplicity and maintainability? Who knows.

Yes, old news is now new news.

Seriously, this has been posted 4 times a day for 2 weeks now.

AI features are also Microsoft's excuse for trying to force customers into a $100/yr subscription model.

It's sad that nuanced talk is getting rarer and rarer. I think we can all agree that AI can be useful if used thoughtfully.

No AI shouldn't be a feature per se. No Microsoft bullshit, on the other hand, is a feature.

Ai being shoved into everything has a problem that even pro ai individuals can probably agree on: you have no control on what the ai is or what it's supposed to do. It will be biased in favor of whomever is shoving it at you. The only ai you can trust is the service you chose, better yet something self hosted.

the lack of nuance is my only complaint with lemmy. it is inundated with anti-ai posts. hell libre office blogs shouldnt be in a programming community. can we hear about languages. or compilers or ides or what ever but not office products
