As a rimworld fan, it's wild to me the lack of mod tools is so far down on the list. Steam Workshop is an incredible resource for gaming, and it's the #1 reason I use steam over anything else. Epic is continuing their foot-shooting obsession by being so steadfastly against it.

Its a lack of everything. Epic isn't just far behind they are in the Mariana Trench.

Yeah even fucking Xbox have had a built in LFG system for over a decade. I'd say Epic only views a launcher as a tool for data and revenue collection but considering how many years it took them to make a shopping cart function I can't even claim that. They are just fully inept at absolutely everything.

Thank you for mentioning remote play! (And other technical features.)

So many people assume Steam is just a store front with social features, even people who argue in support of Steam. But it has so many features that earn Valve $0 and yet are included and improved upon.

This is what [purely] profit driven companies like Epic, EA and Ubisoft can’t understand. Why don’t users flock to their system? They have all the same money making capabilities. Even social features are about networking effect to bring users over. But remote play? How do you justify that to investors?

You whip this same list out and explain simply that this is why their asses are getting handed to them hand over fist. They are drowning in their own ass. Epic is blessed beyond belief to have Fortnite and Rocket League.

The question is why did it take a meme to push Valve to fix its awful, decades old Steam loading time?

It's probably been in the works for awhile, no way is it possible to optimize an entire monolith in such a right time frame.

It seems plausible they just didn't care enough and the fix actually was easy. After this long of it being slow, I don't understand why it would coincidentally happen now other than a complacent blindspot being awoken.

I updated my client and startup still takes 15 seconds. Granted, my boot drive is a SATA3 Samsung 850 EVO, but 15 seconds is still much slower than any other program I have, even Adobe programs. So I don't know if the update works universally for everyone or something went wrong.
