That's true.

I've often said that movies were better when they were financed by studios and producers, and sometimes the mob.

There were hits and a lot of misses, but there was a lot of creativity.

After costs spiraled out of control and the banks got involved in financing, every proposed production went into a spreadsheet, and everything became about whether the movie had enough star power, edit: or had a popular IP, or was a sequel.

Controversial topics, and experimental new ground are considered too risky for the bank's money.

  • That's true, but at the same time, why are we laying that at the feet of the public when one of those "experimental" or "daring" movies turns out to be a huge pile of shit?

We're not allowed to criticize when they fail because then they won't be able to do more? That sounds like a "them" problem. It's not like human history has a shortage of art, film, and music to peruse. So much new media comes out every day you could never see it all in a lifetime. Why is it our problem anymore? Sure they can keep making em, but it doesn't mean we have to keep showing up or keep quiet online because of the fucking off chance that MAYBE someone might be given creative license. And if we don't boo, it gets taken away. That's bullshit to be blaming it on the people who dislike the movie and voice it online.

Cool, like you said, the banks are the issue so maybe Affleck can blame them instead of the people who actually fucking enjoy art. If these fucking jabronis care about a spreadsheet more than anything, then go fuck yourself Affleck and do like fucking Joel Haver and just make fucking movies. He's done like numerous feature films over several years, all incredibly low budget, all straight to his youtube channel.

Bullying? It's Tom Cruise, he can wipe his tears with all of his Scientology bullshit.

Ben Affleck is the latest celebrity to stick up for Tom Cruise‘s “Digger” amid its disastrous box office run, but he’s doing so by warning moviegoers what exactly their trashing of the movie will result in. Mainly, publicly bashing “Digger” will only lead the major Hollywood studios to make “shitty” movies that don’t stand out from each other (aka more IP and franchise fare).

Variety is doing it right here again - calling it "Tom Cruise's 'Digger'".

I won't watch this movie because of Tom Cruise. Maybe the lesson Hollywood should take here is that Tom Cruise fucking sucks.

I hope it leads to them not casting Tom Cruise

I don't care for Tom Cruise. But Digger is a great film. Easily best thing I've seen this year. It's among the best things I've seen a theater period.

I mean for fucks sake, every single movie that gets released is measured by how much money it made. Look at mcu movies, Spiderman etc. Never a headline without the millions or billions of dollars it made.

Now it's, "stop talking about how little money this movie made and focus on how creative it is"?

Specially when we're talking about movies that cost hundreds of millions to produce. I have no sympathy, and declining interest, for Hollywood movies. I spend my days watching small scale and film festival stuff, or old movies.
