RULES (updated 01/22/25)

  1. Be respectful: no harassment, hate speech, bigotry, and/or trolling. To be concise, disrespect is defined by escalation.
  2. Encourage conversation in your OP. This means including heavily implicative subject matter when you can and also engaging in your thread when possible. You won't be punished for trying.
  3. Avoid controversial topics (politics or societal debates come to mind, though we are not saying not to talk about anything that resembles these). There's a guide in the protocol book offered as a mod model that can be used for that; it's vague until you realize it was made for things like the rule in question. At least four purple answers must apply to a "controversial" message for it to be allowed.
  4. Keep it clean and SFW: No illegal content or anything gross and inappropriate. A rule of thumb is if a recording of a conversation put on another platform would get someone a COPPA violation response, that exact exchange should be avoided when possible.
  5. No solicitation such as ads, promotional content, spam, surveys etc. The chart redirected to above applies to spam material as well, which is one of the reasons its wording is vague, as it applies to a few things. Again, a "spammy" message must be applicable to four purple answers before it's allowed.
  6. Respect privacy as well as truth: Don’t ask for or share any personal information or slander anyone. A rule of thumb is if something is enough info to go by that it "would be a copyright violation if the info was art" as another group put it, or that it alone can be used to narrow someone down to 150 physical humans (Dunbar's Number) or less, it's considered an excess breach of privacy. Slander is defined by intentional utilitarian misguidance at the expense (positive or negative) of a sentient entity. This often links back to or mixes with rule one, which implies, for example, that even something that is true can still amount to what slander is trying to achieve, and that will be looked down upon.

Hot Fuzz: used to be my favourite of the cornetto trillogy, but now Saun of the Dead is becoming my favourite

Office Space: over hyped in my opionion. Its fine for a 90s movie, but its not as amazing as ive been told.

Gone Girl: still a 9/10 movie. ::: better than the book imo ::: , but still bottom of the 3 in my personal 2010s Fincher Trilogy (Social Network, Dragon Tattoo, Gone Girl. In that order)

I will watch Mickey 17 this weekend if plans hold. I might have unreasonable expectations, so trying to temper myself before going in.

I watched that this week. Enjoyed it. It's a good story well told. Temper those expectations though. It's no classic.

Did movie communities change? They continue to be insanely confusing.

I watched Barry S01-04 this week. Insanely fun and unique but season four really through me off.

We watched White Lotus S03 but it was so shallow and boring that we went back and watched S01-02. S01 is perfect! S02 is great. S03 E01-04 literally nothing happens, E05-08 it gets better but it’s too late to become a good show after half a season

Finished off my rewatch of Superman the Animated Series into Justice League into Justice League Unlimited.

Then finally checked out Batman Ninja vs Yakuza League. Liked it a lot more than I thought I would. Was just as wild and wacky as the first one but not quite as nonsensical.

Then Wolf Children. The whole I watched that was because of a Stardew Valley meme that uses a screenshot from it. I've got kinda mixed feelings on it. Loved a lot of it, not sure I love how everything turned out though.

And finally, I rewatched The Island of Dr. Moreau after the news about Val Kilmer. Still a pretty cool movie.

What's next, I'm not so sure. I've had an anime called Mashle: Magic and Muscles lined up for a little while now. Based entirely on the fact that apparently there's a non-binary character in it. Otherwise I don't even know if it's good or way too pervy / creepy for my tastes like a lot of anime.

And I've got the two Dune movies lined up to watch. Which I want to watch but feel reluctant to at the same time for some reason.

Probably going to end up watching She-Ra again actually.

Edit: actually now I'm thinking that Young Justice might be worth a rewatch too.

  • The Studio - First episode - seems fun, but too similar to The Franchise just at the moment, and without the subtle wit of that one.
  • The Righteous Gemstones - part way through season 4. This season lacks the coherence of the previous ones and seems to be be relying on continuous gross-out humour to make up for that. There was a natural end point with season 3. I will give this another episode, but may abandon it there.
  • Adolescence - I completely agree with those who say that it isn't the kids who need to see Adolescence, but the parents. I found that there was some heavy-handed moralising in eps 2 & 4, but 1 and 3 were intense and excellent and all of them were technically impressive.
  • The White Lotus - another compelling season of the wealthy and damned paraded for our judgement. Fine performances from Posey, Issacs and Goggins particularly.
  • The Residence - I wasn't sure about episode 1. It seemed to be trying too hard and not nearly as funny as the director seems to think, but episode 2 was much improved. I'll continue.
