Why do people wish people wish people happy birthday to each other, wven if you dont care / dont know each other?

Am in contact with Mom, but not depedant. Dad is only my "mechanic". Only "dependant" for car things. Know nothing about cars. (My joke is taken off youtbe but; Guy A:"how big is the engine?" Guy B:"About this big" holding up his hands ~1m apart)

Yeah. If he wanted a birthday text once a year, he ahould have not punched his way to "victory".

I do look back on the night thst he showed his true colours. I could have called the police about a disturbance, but i didnt. (Religious brainwashing about dad is right, no matter what)

But i didnt.

This June is 1 year of the Straw that broke the Camels back. Wonder how life would be if i made that phone call...

Hot Fuzz: used to be my favourite of the cornetto trillogy, but now Saun of the Dead is becoming my favourite

Office Space: over hyped in my opionion. Its fine for a 90s movie, but its not as amazing as ive been told.

Gone Girl: still a 9/10 movie. ::: better than the book imo ::: , but still bottom of the 3 in my personal 2010s Fincher Trilogy (Social Network, Dragon Tattoo, Gone Girl. In that order)

Dad punched kids last year. Dads birthday this weekend. Do I wish him a happy birthday? (Mom knows what Dad did, but insists i wish him a happy birthday) (Not sure if you were actually curious of my dilema, or just want me to break it down and answer my own question, but you did the 2nd one)

The night he proved he was OK with punching his children, i came to the conclusion that "I lost my dad, but i still have a father".

Its midnight the night before the birthday. Might be a bit rambling. Am 80% sure its OK to skip his birthday, but that 20% is open correction. Am open to learn something new. (Im not a father. Maybe theres something i dont know)

On the one hand, my father lost his dad when he was 12, so he is not perfect. I want to assume he is atleast trying his best. But this past year, "his best" was "OK with punching his children" and as far as I know, hasnt seen his grand children. (My sister has a kid. Living happy with her partner. Since sister and partner is not married, my dad doesnt acknowlege them.)

Im OK with skipping the birthday text to father, but mother (who i still talk to) insist i send the text.

I remember readng articles MI:Dubai. Didnt think much of it. Camerawork and editing makes it look cool and such.

Then I watched the movie. Even on the small screen, I was on the edge of my seat.

Am willing to give up my kidney to watch that movie in IMAX.

I left reddit one December (think it was 2023). They showed off thier Reddit Recap. Realised I switched from windows to linux to AVOID data collection, then use an app that gladly showed off all the data they collect.

Born in South Africa. Grand Father was a Pastor. He put sandwiches on top of the rubbish bins so homeless wouldnt have to search bins for food. (Went back there as an adult. So many things to say there)

Early teens in UAE. Had Muslim neighbours. Nicest family Ive met. Didnt push thier beliefs on anyone.

Australia. Mid teens to adult+. Got diss-illusioned with the church. Pastor made jokes about rhe old building. Had a notebook to take notes on what he said each week. Realised he duplicated some sermons.

I am fully open to believe it was my late teens - ealry adulthood that opened my eyes to the real world, or irs the churches fault for not sheltering me enough to convinee me that christianty is the way forward.

I already said the pastor had neighbours sleeping in the yard, but at the same time, they were trying to convice us teens to go overseas ro recruit new christians there. If you can afford plane tickets over seas, you can afford a blanket and some hot food for people in your home town.

Again, theres over 7 billion people on this planet. Maybe im just unlucky, got the short straw, and saw the worst of christianity, but im probably not going back.

Edit/Update Theres nothing wrong with believing in something. There is something wrong with forcing others to believe in what you believe.

My mom is a devout christian, but was forced to divorce my abusive dad. Am I going to tell her she is wrong? No, jesus is what is keeping her sane. My dad believes that he is the man of the house, but now he thinks the can punch his way to victory. Forcing others to believe what he believes is a no-no.

My aunt in South Africa is living in 1/4 of a house. (Bought for cheep ro renovate with husband. Husband died. Now she is 50+y/o, living in a bedroom, baththoom, and kitchen, while the living room, dining room, and 3 bedrooms are pretty much non-exsistent, with only her faith to keep her going? Im not going to tell her that she made a mistake.

Faith/belief can make ordinary humans do incredible things.

But forcing it onto others is where I get uncomfortable.

Im following the handbook, and I'm up to configuring the kernel. (In a vm. Skipping the optional installing firmware/microcode for now)

Trying for an OpenRC system, but it looks like all the steps need systemd.

All the videos I watched seems to skip this step and just go to Kernel configuration and compilation, but I dont want to a) mix old videos and up-to-date handbook, and b) blindly copy commands. I understood mostly everything untill now. Just this kernel step where I got lost the first time I tried to install gentoo.

On a more serious note, how does updating apps on gentoo work? I understand that everything is built on your system, but then if the app is updated, do you need to re-compile every time?
