I tried to olay Shadows Of Mordor recently and found out why people don't discuss or praise pretty much any other part of that game. Bland as fuck. It has the detective vision, arkham-ish combo combat, non-canonical story (understandable but ai think they did it in a dumb way and not a way that freed them to make a better game necessarily).

i haven't played the mordor games but i don't think this addition would transform a shallow open world into being tolerable personally, i think its kind of overhyped because of the patent stuff.
I think it is both. It could absolutely be developed on further and perhaps become something revolutionary but as long as its held hostage by IP bullshit that won't happen.
I just wish we had more nemesis system games man ;-;
the patent shouldn't be valid but corpos don't think the fight would be profitable
