This is why federation is so important. Nobody (country, company, or admins/mods) should have absolute authority to censor an entire platform.

The only reason no one wants Federation is that governments can't control it and corporations can't monetize it.
And to wealthy overlords, they don't like having people having the ability to freely talk about how terrible the wealthy oligarchy is making the world.
Social media, especially federated open source social media should be seen and treated like the postal service or water utility.
Free speech and free and open communications is a human requirement that allows all of humanity to progress and grow equally for everyone. Being able to talk to one another is like having clean water or air to breathe, we all need it and society needs it as a whole to grow in a healthy way. If we don't have free flowing thoughts and ideas, then it will all be left to be controlled by a small group of people who will only want to enrich and empower themselves and their allies.
Couldn't have said it better. It's the ultimate free speech.
We have a bad habit (speaking as someone in the US) of celebrating these lofty ideals, but then privatizing the way that they are commonly experienced so that it technically isn't a violation of our values by the government. I think if it's something we truly hold dear, we should strive for it everywhere we can.
I am shocked, shocked!
Well, not that shocked...
Pity the peeps on bluesky have to learn the hard way - if they will learn...
Dont give them the benefit of the doubt here. This is exactly what they wanted, the fake federation talk was always just a stepping stone.
Oh yeah, the people that made bluesky are fully aware of this. The users though... most are either clueless or unwilling to accept the obvious because "picking a mastodon server is sooooo difficult".
At least the lesson has come quite early on. It helps to have a short feedback loop
Hilarious at all of the uninformed comments. They didn’t take down any accounts and two nothing not even federation prevents this. I know many of you like to play tough online but in the real world where governments have significant influence even outside of their jurisdictions people have fear. Governments have easily resources to turn peoples lives upside down. There’s nothing stoping Trump nor the EU from submitting requests and threads to any fedi admin users. Just because other servers could be spent up means little to nothing if large server and multiple servers are shutdown due to the government. That destroys people’s access, content and social graphs, the primary reason they’re using socials to begin with
lol. reply to them with 🖕
Authoritarian regimes like Erdogan's will always try throwing their weight around, it is important that social media platforms don't fold unless there is obvious lawbreaking, and there is virtually nothing on that account, certainly nothing that breaks any laws I can think of.
Like two lightning bolts at once, out of some kind of a cloudless periwinkle sky
:shocked pikachu:
Damn, Bluesky will probably follow Israel's orders if the latter asks them to delete accounts.
They are not deleting accounts, they are disabling access from these countries to the accounts. Which has of course the same effect but can be circumvented with a VPN.
