(when you hit the recents button) I can't believe they actually restored a feature that they'd removed by accident during an update this is wild. how long has it been back? how many years did it take them to accomplish this

yeah. I think Android 12 or 13? I kept sending them feedback for like 6 months and then just left it.

I've never noticed its absence and I follow Android news and use the latest updates since Android 9 on my Pixel phones. It was probably a bug.

It's always been there. They did (a long time ago now) move it all the way to the left to prevent people from pressing it all the time. In theory, Android should manage resources well enough that you shouldn't have to use it.

I've always had it...

This very well may be OEM or custom ROM dependant.

GrapheneOS has it on the very left (as shown above), which requires scrolling, modern Samsung and IIRC older LineageOS has it on the bottom, always visible.

How long ago did you press that recents button?! 👀

It was missing for me on stock android for pixel 7 for the past 6 months or so of updates. It is back now!

thank you for confirming that I'm not insane!

Why are you still using kiwi browser. Isn't it bing discontinued. The repo is archived. https://github.com/kiwibrowser/src

[–] tilefan@lemm.ee 3 points 1 week ago (2 children)

because I haven't been paying attention, and it still works for everything I need it to work for. is there a security issue with continuing to use it? and is there a good replacement (ie., a mobile browser that uses regular Chrome extensions)

[–] Stomata@sh.itjust.works 1 points 6 days ago

Browser is a sensitive piece of software. So you have to care about it's security.
Extensions are useful but they creat fingerprinting problems. If you need them there is Firefox and it's forks.
BTW what extensions do you use on mobile browsers?

[–] mellejwz@lemmy.world 2 points 1 week ago

Security is definitely a concern, so replacing it is recommended. I'm not sure about other browsers compatible with Chrome extensions though.

Does it not also exist on the bottom right in the recents view? This left-most position is the least useful. But I don't think it ever dissappeared for me.

[–] tilefan@lemm.ee 1 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (1 children)

nah, I don't see anything on the bottom right

[–] MicrowavedTea@infosec.pub 2 points 1 week ago

Huh might depend on the specific rom. It's there on Sony along with pop up and multi window.

Mine has always been and still is far left of recents, stock pixel 6
