Colbert told shocked audience he only found out the night before, as CBS announced it will end the entire Late Show franchise after 33 years

Remember the storyline in V for Vendetta where that late-show host makes fun of the Dear Leader, and eventually gets head-bagged late one night, never to be seen again?

I'm surprised honestly it hasn't already happened in the new USA. I am willing to bet cancelling this show was a secret clause of that $20 million 'settlement' (bribe), agreed in a smoke-filled room and never written down, as additional incentive to allow the Paramount merger.

What a fucking horrible regime the USA has become.

EDIT: Someone pointed out on another posting of this news that The Late Show is one of their most popular shows (or the most popular late-night show at least), too. This is obvious pandering for favour.

It’s the most popular late night show, however ratings across late night have fallen off a cliff over the past few years, and the Late Show no longer makes a profit. They axed the post-Late Show show this season, and seem to have decided to lose the main show too.

Because most people who watch that show do it the next day on YouTube.

Yeah. Something people keep forgetting is that broadcast television is basically dead now. The only people who watch are retirees and those are dropping like flies. More so when their social security checks don't show up and they no longer have Medicare thanks to their glorious leader.

The revenue from which is factored into the decision.

Colbert is one of the best. Fuck CBS trying to make their merger happen by quieting one of their few employees that aren't boring.

Just a couple days after he criticized Paramount for their Trump settlement? curious-marx

TBH, I haven't watched late night television since we lost Letterman, Ferguson and O'Brien.

We will never again see the likes of:

I never have a shit about Britney Spears but craigy Ferg earned a lot of respect from me when I warned this monologue

They also lost the 60 Minutes producer, a show also critical of Trump.

I’m super disappointed in this network.

CBS has been openly shitty for a hot minute now. I'm not surprised they are doing this, but still disgusted.

[–] mx_smith@lemmy.world 2 points 2 weeks ago

Are we surprised? Look at the lineup of shows, more copaganda dramas than any other network.
