Said not in an informational way, but as a "mind your own business, get a grip and fix your own problems before you go around pointing fingers"

[–] coyootje@lemmy.world 63 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Imo it doesn't matter in what way he said it, it's a baller move either way. No other country leader has mentioned this when having to deal with the annoying orange even though they should have. Even when the NATO summit was going on everyone was just brown nosing the whole damn time, ridiculous.

I think at least in part other countries can pretend it never happen because they didn't have to deal with their own wanna be facist at home with ties to Trump. Brazil does not have the luxury to do so when not only Bolsonaro happened but it is still being a problem and Trump is actively trying to influence it in Brazil.

You know you’re fucked when Brazil is dunking on you

[–] kadup@lemmy.world 68 points 1 week ago (4 children)

This kind of rhetoric is exactly why countries get this inflated view of themselves and get surprised when they elect somebody like Trump.

Your comment implies Brazil is somehow a bad country so "if even Brazil is dunking on you, you know you're bad!" but Brazil is the world's 8th economy, they have a robust electronic voting system that was audited many times and works fantastically well, they have a digital payments system that works instantly and isn't tied to any corporation, they have the largest biomass and clean water reserves in the world, public healthcare, public universities that actually publish the most research in the entire country (out-competing all private institutions by a huge margin) and many more examples.

They're not perfect... but not even Switzerland is perfect. When you feed this world view of "even Brazil" you become deeply blind to your own monumental issues.

Didn't expect the switzerland mention, but can 100% agree that we aren't perfect over here.

Your exploding roads are pretty metal, though.

[–] TankovayaDiviziya@lemmy.world 3 points 1 week ago

That's because it is full of shrapnels.

[–] Verdorrterpunkt@feddit.org 1 points 1 week ago

Our metal roads (... rail....) are pretty sick as well ;)

[–] kadup@lemmy.world 3 points 1 week ago

Oh there's a compliment built in, don't worry. Switzerland is such a fantastic place I used it as an example of "country many people would argue is amongst the best, without much discussion". Certainly not perfect, because nothing ever is, but a great place too.

Yeah, but Americans have made it abundantly clear that we don't have what it takes to uphold our own Constitution.

Which means it's a completely useless piece of paper and we're going to collapse into authoritarianism.

[–] OrteilGenou@lemmy.world 2 points 1 week ago

That's the spirit

Brazil has experience with dictatorship so they known how to deal with it. America is yet to have a fully fledged one. But speaking of which, the Brazilian dictatorship in the 1970-80's was sponsored by the CIA. Manufactured dictatorship is coming home to roost.

Yeah right, Bolsonaro did way worse and he is free

[–] FrowingFostek@lemmy.world 25 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

After everything the Republican political machine has done, Trump being in an ankle monitor like Bolsonaro would be a great start.

[–] ChilledPeppers@lemmy.dbzer0.com 24 points 1 week ago

Well, Bolsonaro is ineligible so thats that. At least we made sure he won't be elected again after doing that. (Cough cough)

[–] lorty@lemmy.ml 20 points 1 week ago

Well, one is ineligible, with an ankle monitor. The other is president. I feel like Brazil is doing this way better.

[–] LePoisson@lemmy.world 7 points 1 week ago

Isn't he going on trial soon? They just threw an ankle monitor on him a few days ago. So hopefully justice of some kind will prevail.

[–] gwilikers@lemmy.ml 4 points 1 week ago (3 children)

Oh yeah? What did Bolsonaro do that was worse than Trump?

(That wasn't a loaded question -- I sincirely want to know.)

[–] ICastFist@programming.dev 18 points 1 week ago

There were plans for assassinating Lula, Geraldo Alckmin (vice president) and Alexandre Torres (supreme court judge)

That one failed, so the january 8 attack happened. Luckily for Brazil, it also failed.

Oh, and before the attack happened, there was one attempt to explode a fuel truck near the Brasilia airport, plus one small bomb attack on the Federal Police HQ. So, yeah, funny bunch.

Bolsonaro was president during covid and took many actions to avoid social distancing, vaccines development and masks usage. Even after it was clear that it was a global deadly pandemic, he tried to say it was nothing serious and that people shouldn't worry about it. He lost 3 (iirc) health ministers during the process. Trump denied at first, but changed his line of action and for sure killed much less people than Bolsonaro

[–] ShinkanTrain@lemmy.ml 11 points 1 week ago (1 children)

But if he were on trial in Brazil, who would be threatening Brazil with a trade war for said trial?

[–] johncandy1812@lemmy.ca 10 points 1 week ago (1 children)

George Conway's wife is partially responsible for getting Trump elected the first time. I appreciate what Lula said but not who posted it.

[–] sin_free_for_00_days@sopuli.xyz 19 points 1 week ago

ex wife, and her support for fuckhead was a big part of the reason.
