Rules (2024-08-30)

  1. This is an English-language community. Comments should be in English. Posts can link to non-English news sources when providing a full-text translation in the post description. Automated translations are fine, as long as they don't overly distort the content.
  2. No links to misinformation or commercial advertising. When you post outdated/historic articles, add the year of publication to the post title. Infographics must include a source and a year of creation; if possible, also provide a link to the source.
  3. Be kind to each other, and argue in good faith. Don't post direct insults nor disrespectful and condescending comments. Don't troll nor incite hatred. Don't look for novel argumentation strategies at Wikipedia's List of fallacies.
  4. No bigotry, sexism, racism, antisemitism, islamophobia, dehumanization of minorities, or glorification of National Socialism. We follow German law; don't question the statehood of Israel.
  5. Be the signal, not the noise: Strive to post insightful comments. Add "/s" when you're being sarcastic (and don't use it to break rule no. 3).
  6. If you link to paywalled information, please provide also a link to a freely available archived version. Alternatively, try to find a different source.
  7. Light-hearted content, memes, and posts about your European everyday belong in other communities.
  8. Don't evade bans. If we notice ban evasion, that will result in a permanent ban for all the accounts we can associate with you.
  9. No posts linking to speculative reporting about ongoing events with unclear backgrounds. Please wait at least 12 hours. (E.g., do not post breathless reporting on an ongoing terror attack.)
  10. Always provide context with posts: Don't post uncontextualized images or videos, and don't start discussions without giving some context first.

(This list may get expanded as necessary.)

Posts that link to the following sources will be removed

Unless they're the only sources, please also avoid The Sun, Daily Mail, any "thinktank" type organization, and non-Lemmy social media. Don't link to Twitter directly, instead use xcancel.com. For Reddit, use old:reddit:com

(Lists may get expanded as necessary.)

Ban lengths, etc.

We will use some leeway to decide whether to remove a comment.

If need be, there are also bans: 3 days for lighter offenses, 7 or 14 days for bigger offenses, and permanent bans for people who don't show any willingness to participate productively. If we think the ban reason is obvious, we may not specifically write to you.

If you want to protest a removal or ban, feel free to write privately to the primary mod account @EuroMod@feddit.org

The Polish Prime Minister referred to a similar assessment by the head of the US European Command (USEUCOM) and Supreme Allied Commander Europe, General Alexis Grinkiewicz, with whom he had spoken shortly before. According to this assessment, by 2027 Russia and China could become strong enough to seek a coordinated confrontation with NATO and the United States.

Given the ongoing war in Ukraine, a number of possible scenarios are circulating among Western military experts about when other European countries could also face aggression. Forecasts indicate that this could happen as early as 2027. German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius pointed to 2029.

That sounds reasonable, but we should definitely not count on the US. Instead, we should prepare ourselves for a situation in which the US is also led by a ruthless despot and even sides with Russia.

It's not as if that's unrealistic, which is why I don't understand why it shouldn't be a possible scenario.

The US is no longer an ally of the EU; the current US government leaves no doubt about that. Even Germany and Poland, which have traditionally had close ties to the US, should not be under the illusion that Trump and his henchmen have any interest in preserving democratic structures. It should be obvious by now that this administration cannot be trusted as it passes off organized crime as the legitimate actions of a state - in this respect, Trump's syndicate is hardly any different from Putin's - they have ties and a lot in common.

I've not heard a good explanation why they would.

They used up their tanks, artillery and manpower in Ukraine. They haven't even won in Ukraine. What would they gain by attacking the west?

I don't get it either. If Russia were that militarily strong, why wouldn't they splat Ukraine and be done? Materiel aside, they've been facing depopulation for decades and are actively grinding up their men, young and old.

So my question to concerned European leaders is this: What do you know that us plebs don't know?!

The money they're gonna make from their defence contractor friends.

That said European military should be strong enough to serve as a deterrent. Regardless of who's making bank out of it. Ideally the workers in those industries, but who am I kidding. πŸ˜„

They wouldn't use tanks. Drones, propaganda, etc.

And what would they gain by attacking us with drones?

This is backwards. It's the US that will defend their hegemony in 2027. The EU will be involved because we are American allies and will take care of Russia.

If economies grow like they do, China will take over without war. They have no reason to fight.

It’s eight nation army without Russia again. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eight-Nation_Alliance

I mean sure, WW3 has been cooking for a while now

Sitting here in the US I want to beg you Europeans to prepare for the worst. At the present moment the US can not help and most likely will actively help Russia. I am sick for my country. We have 1/3 that are in a political cult, 1/3 that are apathetic, and 1/3 who want a functional world for everyone. I don't know what to do anymore.
