Heard a comment about that earlier this week that I thought made sense: as Germany doesn't have its own nuclear weapons, they only need carrier systems to deliver the nukes the Americans have stationed there. If the US want to sabotage them, they can just withdraw their nukes, rendering the carriers useless even if they were domestic systems.
