When Moore shot at Ford with a .38 revolver, narrowly missing Ford, Sipple dove towards her and grabbed her arm;[8] [...] Initial news reports noted that Sipple was a former Marine, but did not mention that he was gay.[10] [...] two phone messages identifying Sipple as gay. One was from Reverend Ray Broshears, the head of a gay activist group called the Lavender Panthers.[12] The other was from local gay activist Harvey Milk, a friend of Sipple on whose city council campaign Sipple had worked.[12] Milk wanted to portray Sipple as a "gay hero" to help "break the stereotype of homosexuals [as] timid, weak and unheroic figures";[5][6][8] he told a friend, "It's too good an opportunity. For once we can show that gays do heroic things, not just all that caca about molesting children and hanging out in bathrooms."[11] According to historian Harold Evans, "[T]here was no invitation to the White House for Sipple, not even a commendation. Milk made a fuss about that."[13] [...] Two days after the thwarted assassination attempt, unable to reach Sipple,[12] Caen wrote of Sipple as a gay man and a friend of Harvey Milk, speculating Ford offered praise "quietly" because of Sipple's sexual orientation. Sipple was besieged by reporters, as was his family. His mother refused to speak to him.

(my main instance doesn't appear to federating atm so i reposted on this alt acc of mine. apologies if this shows up as a duplicate post)

"You saved the president. What, are you gay?!"

[–] joyjoy@lemmy.zip 28 points 1 month ago (1 children)

The president was kidnapped by ninjas. Are you a gay enough dude to rescue him?

Saved the President who got to be Veep because the previous Veep was corrupt, and then got to be President because the President was also corrupt. Then he lost the subsequent election to some peanut farmer. How the Republican party ever recovered from this period is explained through even more corruption.

But Ford got a whole new class of supercarriers named after him, so that's nice.

Yes, I do have a pet peeve about Ford, why do you ask?

[–] athairmor@lemmy.world 15 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I find your peeve fascinating.

It’d be cool to see you bring every post about American politics back to some shitty thing Gerald Ford did.

I want to see theories developed about how the failure of this assassination attempt brought us into the current shitty timeline.

Someone might write a movie script about going back in time to kill Gerald Ford.

So much potential. Release the Ford hate!

Outed... For good? That's new.

I also find it annoying that despite learning women's sufferage, despite learning about black history, and despite gays being included in discussions about human rights growing up I did not once ever hear or learn about Harvey Milk or other gay rights activists until the movie Milk came out.

[–] Harvey656@lemmy.world 1 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago) (1 children)

[–] Aatube@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 1 month ago

He was outed by Harvey Milk, more details are in the article or in what I quoted lol

[–] modern_drift@lemmy.world 17 points 1 month ago (2 children)

They've been talking about restrooms since before '75?

Should have been plenty of time for them to consolidate all the information they need to prove their argument, right?

[–] porksnort@slrpnk.net 3 points 1 month ago

Yes. I grew up during the fight for ERA (equal rights amendment). I clearly remember asking my mom what the fuss was about and she said it would make separate mens and womens bathrooms illegal. About 1977ish I think this was

[–] DragonTypeWyvern@midwest.social 2 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

In this case it's about gay dudes hooking up in them and glory holes and such but same vibe, sure

[–] Rai@lemmy.dbzer0.com 15 points 1 month ago (2 children)

There’s a great Radiolab episode where you can hear him tell his story!

[–] BlushedPotatoPlayers@sopuli.xyz 1 points 1 month ago

I knew I heard this somewhere!

[–] 418_im_a_teapot@sh.itjust.works 1 points 1 month ago

That’s the right link, but the Apple Podcast link on that page appears to be incorrect. Here’s a direct link for users of that app.

With friends like that...

I think it’s funny Ford was both Vice President and President but never voted into either role.

He truly is a Homer Simpson.

[–] athairmor@lemmy.world 4 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Tripped his way up the ladder.

[–] silasmariner@programming.dev 2 points 1 month ago

Looks like he pulled a Homer!

[–] J92@lemmy.world 6 points 1 month ago (1 children)
