It feels awful to me. It used to feel much worse when I was younger for some reason. Touching it felt like it was between by teeth.

Yes.

EDIT:

https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/haptodysphoria

Noun

haptodysphoria (uncountable)

  1. An odd, disagreeable sensation felt by certain people when handling peaches, velvet or other fuzzy surfaces.

Well, peaches don't bother me at all, and I can't think of any other fuzzy surface that does. But I don't like the feel of velvet at all.

And while I haven't touched it recently

maybe partly because I avoid it

I'm pretty sure that, like OP, it bothered me more when I was younger.

EDIT2: I don't experience anything like it being in my teeth, as OP does, just find it distinctly unpleasant. I remember looking at portraits of women wearing velvet dresses and thinking that they had to be outright masochists to have their entire body draped in the stuff.

I also can't think of any other fabric that I have a similar dislike for. I don't much like scratchy wool, but finer wool is fine, and even with rough wool, it's not the same sensation at all.

EDIT3:

Now I'm just imagining what this this would have to feel like:

https://lemmy.today/pictrs/image/62721fdc-78a9-487c-bebc-50b9270adbbc.jpeg

Gahhhh.

EDIT4: Further discussion in the thread and reflection later, it's not just velvet. Suede also does it (not as strongly, I guess), and new microfiber blankets can cause a limited degree of the same sensation for me. And it's associated with movement against the fabric.

Yes same to almost all of that, except it gets my teeth too. Worst is when my fingernails are short and my nails and finger pads touch it simultaneously, makes me want to work my jaw up and down as if I’m chewing something like fatty meat. Also send shivers down my spine just thinking about it

[–] Irelephant@lemm.ee 5 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Literally this.

Whenever I try to write on paper with a broken pencil or unclicked pen, or scratch it by mistake I feel like that.

[–] tal@lemmy.today 2 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago) (1 children)

Do you get it with suede too? Now that I think about it, it's not just velvet...suede gives me a similar sensation. And both are fuzzy fabrics.

[–] Irelephant@lemm.ee 2 points 3 weeks ago

yeah, i do.

[–] tal@lemmy.today 2 points 3 weeks ago

makes me want to work my jaw up and down

I also have a "grit my teeth" reaction, but I don't think that it's because I have a sensation in my teeth. More like I just need to distract myself from being in contact with it.

That picture isn't velvet. It's velveteen, or at best crushed velvet. I'd have to check how think it is to see, but it doesn't look like crushed velvet. Real velvet is an inch and a half thick, and a pain in the ass to wear, because if you move at all you crush part of the velvet and you can't fix that.

It doesn't bother me, but my wife absolutely hates the feeling of terry cloth. Apparently that is common for people with ADHD (which she has) and autism. The main area I can relate is microfiber towels. I think those feel terrible. It's like I can feel the strands catching on each skin cell.

[–] auraithx@lemmy.dbzer0.com 4 points 3 weeks ago

Yep for me it’s styrofoam, velvet, and sleeping without socks and the cotton covers nagging on my skin.

[–] tal@lemmy.today 2 points 3 weeks ago

Terrycloth is probably one of my favorite fabric feels. @auraithx@lemmy.dbzer0.com mentioned styrofoam, and I don't like the feel of rubbing against it, but it's certainly not on par with velvet for me.

[–] picnicolas@slrpnk.net 6 points 3 weeks ago

Yes! I also can’t stand the feeling of dry hands/feet, getting them dusty, or lettuce rubbing against lettuce 🙀

[–] reallykindasorta@slrpnk.net 6 points 3 weeks ago (2 children)

What about the almost wet feeling material (microfiber?) they make a lot of throw blankets out of?

[–] flamingo_pinyata@sopuli.xyz 3 points 3 weeks ago

I love the feeling of this. Light, warm and fluffy at the same time.

[–] tal@lemmy.today 2 points 3 weeks ago

Oh, I know what you're talking about. I was confused with other people talking about microfiber, because I was thinking about older ones that aren't as fluffy, but a new microfiber blanket can have a bit of the same thing for me. Not nearly as intense as velvet for me, though.

[–] Alue42@fedia.io 6 points 3 weeks ago

I hate velvet. Everyone says to save space in your closet you should get those slim velvet hangers. Not a chance. Over my dead body will those velvet hangers ever see the light of day in my closet. I don't want to even think about any of my clothes touching those hangers, let alone myself. You wouldn't believe the effort I put into finding non-velvet hangers just as slim as the velvet ones to prove to family and friends I wasn't wasting space in my closet.

[–] Lennnny@lemmy.world 5 points 3 weeks ago

Yes! Ew! My best friend has a velour couch and she lays a blanket down for me when I come to hang out because I hate touching it. Also, carpet. I dry heave when I have to vacuum carpet, something to do with going against the grain. Ugh.

[–] isame@hexbear.net 5 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago)

It's horrible and I hate it. A partner in the past stopped wearing a velvet item of clothing. Not because I asked - I would never - but because I touched her noticably less when she'd wear it. I cannot stand the feeling.

Edit: peaches don't bother me at all.

[–] Keener@lemm.ee 4 points 3 weeks ago

Velvet, and putting on cotton socks when your feet are wet.

Both feel horrible! I don't mind holding a peach though

[–] al_Kaholic@lemmynsfw.com 4 points 3 weeks ago

Why do you have velvet in your teeth?

Velvet feels roughly the same to me as being in a dark room when it's 110° with no air movement.

[–] hera@feddit.uk 3 points 3 weeks ago

I'm the opposite! I love the feeling of it

[–] meh@lemmy.blahaj.zone 3 points 3 weeks ago (2 children)

velvet doesnt get me bad but paper is the devil's texture. best explination i've found is Tactile Defensiveness. light touch with movement, especially on the type of skin that can grown hair, sets off the nervous systems fight/flight response. like nails on a chalk board meets being zapped by a low volt current. and varies in intensity from "this shirt makes me feel a little anxious" to "if you hand me a pencil instead the correct pen i will do violance upon your entire family tree".

[–] Irelephant@lemm.ee 3 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

I'm usually fine with paper, but if I scratch it with my nails or use a broken pencil on it, it sounds awful.

[–] meh@lemmy.blahaj.zone 2 points 3 weeks ago

scratch it with my nails or use a broken pencil on it

my blood pressure went up just reading that

[–] tal@lemmy.today 1 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago)

light touch with movement

Movement against velvet definitely is part of the problem for me.

[–] Des@hexbear.net 2 points 3 weeks ago

nah entirely the opposite but I do get where you are coming from. there's some carpet grains that make my teeth hurt and vibrate when i rub on them (or even think about it)

[–] southsamurai@sh.itjust.works 2 points 3 weeks ago

My wife does lol. Cotton balls too, for the same reason.

[–] thisismyhaendel@lemmy.world 2 points 3 weeks ago

I love that you commented about this! I totally agree and would never have thought to bring it up lol
