I've been trying a little bit off and on to use the microblogging feature to reach out to users over on Mastodon, and while things are generally working, there are some road bumps:

First, edits are not federated to Mastodon, so whatever you post first becomes final. Take this post: While my edits (such as a miswritten hashtag, FIVEfiftyone) have federated to lemmy.world, the post is still in its original broken form when seen on Mastodon.

Second, the cards attached to cards seem to go for the first attached link - including hashtags. It would be better if this feature ignored hashtags while generating the cards - in the discussed post, I would have preferred for the card to lead to 50501.chat.

Third, how linked communities are treated seems a bit random - sometimes they become links including the ! (as happened to !Brainstorming@50501.chat in my comment to the discussed message), while other times the name of the community is presented with the ! but without the server name or a link. I think this depends on whether the linked community has been federated with the Mbin instance of the orginial poster.

It's probably not a priority, but I figured I might as well write down my experiences. Keep up the great work! :)

Just as a general response: microblog has definitely not been our main focus. Imo we should shift focus a bit more in that direction, but I blocked myself a bit with writing the tests for our ActivityPub backend which is taking a long time. I hope I can make a lot of progress this weekend, but we'll see (I don't enjoy writing tests that much, but they are important...)

  1. As I do not have a dev instance of mastodon (which I should definitely spin up at some point) I did not test a lot with it... Edits not federating to it definitely surprise me.
  2. Do you mean the preview cards from mastodon, like the link preview?
  3. I think mastodon just doesn't understand the !community@server syntax... but that definitely needs some testing

2: yes, link preview cards. It seems mbin federates hashtags as well as certain mentions as links, and these links are then given a card
3: It seems mbin does some processing before sending it to mastodon - I was expecting it to write it out as text, possibly as a link to the original community, but instead it becomes a text without the instance name for communities that are federated with my instance, and a link to a search on my instance for communities that are not federated

Hmm if you look at your post on my mastodon server: https://wehavecookies.social/@aasatru@kbin.earth/113464697342661071 It looks fine. Do you have a post that creates the problems you listed?

Original post

The same post on mstdn.social

(Edit: there seems to be a bug in Mbin hiding my first link! https://kbin.earth/m/Resist@fedia.io/p/244062/The-50501-movement-has-set-up-its-own-forum)

As you can see, the Mastodon post is not updated, and it has a n Mbin preview card to the first hashtag. Which is why I can link it, using my mistyped hashtag - direct links to mastodon don't really work, as they redirect to the original instance.

I cannot find the post on your instance at all, when going through my profile. Seems it did not reach that far.

I don't know what would happen if an Mbin user would boost my updated post - if it would send the latest version or one without updates.

Try removing the title from the URL.
