r/Art has quietly gone into lockdown and is no longer accepting submissions after mods began facing severe blowback for banning @haydclay for mentioning the word "print" on the subreddit.
I don’t think Lemmy is any better. The other day, a Lemmy moderator didn’t like a video I shared about the potential collapse of the US and banned me from eight communities. As far as I know, the video wasn’t even AI-generated, so I don’t know where he got that idea from.
About Lemmy not being much better, if that's not a bother to you, I'd suggest looking for another instance. Or if the ban was in a remote instance, to look for communities in other instances (or even make your own communities if you'd be willing to moderate).
And if Lemmy the environment overall attracts some problematic crowds, maybe check Friendica, Mbin and/or PieFed? Latter two are to my knowledge fully compatible with Lemmy communities, and apparently Friendica is too, albeit organized a bit differently.
Since I joined in here, I could tell certain instances could be problematic, but also that ActivityPub allows for a great deal of alternatives and oxygenating the social environment. So while packing your things to find a better place can be annoying, it's still the best option, I think, given the nature of the protocol.

Yeah I just lurk at Reddit and do my engaging here. Too many power addicted mods, and a worsening foreign influence problem.
Not that we're immune here, but it's been a LOT more enjoyable to engage here than Reddit.

I made a comment on one sub that broke a vague rule that they deemed inappropriate.. (something to the effect of making your comments tactful)
When asking about their decision and defending my comment they banned me from all the subreddits they modded.
I was a user for 14 years.. Haven't been back to Reddit since. ✌🏼

I am new to Lemny myself, I do see more productive conversations within here vs Reddit. Less pointless question as well. Mods in general postives & negatives right? Power, corrupts absolutely unless you hmhave checks/balance within a community. Most people don't ask the community.
It entirely depends on the community. I'm sure there are judicious, patient moderators here. I mean, in a small community there's not much work to do, so extra care can be made. But moderation is also a thankless job, and it honestly erodes your soul.
The easiest thing for a mod to do is say "This person broke a rule, I'm banning them from the entire instance". The fair thing to do is issue a warning and remove a comment/post, maybe a temp ban. But most people see one infraction, even a mistaken one, as proof that you aren't fit for the community.

the difference is that there are other duplicate communities on other lemmy instances that you can join to get your content while reddit only has that one subreddit.

Reddit mods are power hungry assholes. This one specifically too. But you also broke the rules of the sub. When I was a mod of a small sub having to handle all sorts of people giving me attitude, I wasn't paid enough for it.
You weren't like "oh sorry, I didn't understand replying to questions with info about my work broke rule 9". You were more like "how dare you".

It's just a terrible subreddit to begin with. The artwork is all shit and uninspiring stuff you would see from a teenager. I'll be the first to admit i have no artistic ability, but all the posts were just the portfolio of high schoolers

I loved pissing off the actual public freak out mods. I never broke the rules just went against their personal politics
I can attest to that. Mods can be furious if something goes against their views, even on lemmy.
I had a case where the mod locked down a whole post and comment section because of this. At the end the mod published a comment which essentially was just them removed.
Pretty much convinces me that rules are just weapons for those in power to exert on their subordinates or subreddit users.
My last message to them was that they are a part of cancel culture and should pro free speech, and undo my ban and issue an apology for power tripping.
I'm fine with them being the king of their domain and kicking me out, but it's fun to tear into them for being irrational and losing their shit over me defending victims or whatever.

I got permabanned from !lemmyshitpost@lemmy.world for asking about the rules in the sticky thread for questions about the rules. Reddit power-tripping mods suck, but we should also be wary about tolerating the same sort of mentality here.
I just looked out of curiosity and I get it, tbh, though you should probably have been given more notice before a temp ban, not a permaban off the bat. You seem to me like you don’t want to follow the rule regarding religion. I’m not trying to start shit, but it’s not a very pleasant set of interactions that follow, and that’s probably not what the mods are looking for.
Being upset about a rule and refusing to follow it are entirely different things, whether the mod understands that or not.
The motherfucker banned me preemptively for something he thought I might do. Not only were there not escalating consequences for multiple offenses (as any reasonable moderation standards would have), there wasn't even a first offense!
I'm not sure if I'm ahead of the game having left reddit entirely before I could get banned from anything, or if I'm missing out on a core cultural experience.
Would you like for us to "yell at you, tell you that your stupid & that you in the wrong subreddit?" That, is what your missing out on! Not much.
