Moderator Guidelines

  • Don’t be mean to users. Be gentle or neutral.
  • Most moderator actions which have a modlog message should include your username.
  • When in doubt about whether or not a user is problematic, send them a DM.
  • Don’t waste time debating/arguing with problematic users.
  • Assume the best, but don’t tolerate sealioning/just asking questions/concern trolling.
  • Ask another mod to take over cases you struggle with, if you get tired, or when things get personal.
  • Ask the other mods for advice when things get complicated.
  • Share everything you do in the mod matrix, both so several mods aren't unknowingly handling the same issues, but also so you can receive feedback on what you intend to do.
  • Don't rush mod actions. If a case doesn't need to be handled right away, consider taking a short break before getting to it. This is to say, cool down and make room for feedback.
  • Don’t perform too much moderation in the comments, except if you want a verdict to be public or to ask people to dial a convo down/stop. Single comment warnings are okay.
  • Send users concise DMs about verdicts about them, such as bans etc, except in cases where it is clear we don’t want them at all, such as obvious transphobes. No need to notify someone they haven’t been banned of course.
  • Explain to a user why their behavior is problematic and how it is distressing others rather than engage with whatever they are saying. Ask them to avoid this in the future and send them packing if they do not comply.
  • First warn users, then temp ban them, then finally perma ban them when they break the rules or act inappropriately. Skip steps if necessary.
  • Use neutral statements like “this statement can be considered transphobic” rather than “you are being transphobic”.
  • No large decisions or actions without community input (polls or meta posts f.ex.).
  • Large internal decisions (such as ousting a mod) might require a vote, needing more than 50% of the votes to pass. Also consider asking the community for feedback.
  • Remember you are a voluntary moderator. You don’t get paid. Take a break when you need one. Perhaps ask another moderator to step in if necessary.

Manager: we need more staff for the holidays!

Assistant manager: How about we use social media to make people think working retail for the holidays is great!

Manager: Sure! But don't be too obvious.

Assistant manager:

(full disclosure i do not like lorenz (OOP) or what she has done to the trans community if that wasn’t already obvious; i encourage each individual to form their own opinion.)

cc @AnarchistArtificer@slrpnk.net

again, * my opinion, i don’t believe there’s enough public evidence to convince 100% of ppl either way *

Lorenz is an ally, so her expression of motives is fine. but Lorenz’ “coverage” of the now ultra-influential trans harassment account Libs of TikTok, to me, pulled them out of relative obscurity into the mainstream.

https://nypost.com/2022/04/19/taylor-lorenz-blasted-for-doxxing-libs-of-tiktok-creator/

https://glaad.org/releases/meta-and-twitter-refuse-action-libs-tiktok-posts-doctors-and-staff-boston-childrens/

https://www.lgbtqnation.com/2024/05/libs-of-tiktok-and-its-dark-influence-on-lgbtq-hate/

by making her “reporting” of the story feel centered on herself rather than the protection of minorities, i genuinely feel more of our trans brothers and sisters have been put in harm’s way.

this is an opinion of mine made more pointed when you look at her other public controversies as a reporter. the details of her departure from the Washington Post aren’t fully public, but based on what is known, i personally read her overall track record as showing a pattern of poor judgment and lying when it’s convenient. Lorenz simply doesn’t, in my opinion, have the basic skills to treat the trans community with the respect and compassion her work requires.

* this is an opinion piece and i welcome others’ perspectives and research. you might even sway my opinion—this isn’t a conclusion I have particularly enjoyed coming to lol *

Seems to me Libs of TikTok was being promoted heavily prior to Lorenz coverage of it in 2022. From the lgbtqnation article:

In August 2021, right-leaning media figure Joe Rogan began promoting Libs of TikTok on his podcast The Joe Rogan Experience, causing Raichik's Twitter account to gain a massive number of new followers.

Not really sure how her reporting of the group brought them into the mainstream when one of the biggest podcasters is promoting the group to their followers.

What has she done to the trans community? I hadn't heard of anything like this, so I'd like to read about it if possible.

To those people ITT actually discussing this tweet as if it's real: Have you ever been to the corporate shilling place known as Reddit? The gaslighting there is so strong, it could give you a sunburn.
Now Twitter seems to go down the same route.

I actually miss working retail...

x.doubt

[–] spujb@lemmy.cafe 50 points 1 week ago (1 children)

tell me you have never worked retail (or even known someone who does) without telling me……..

[–] Caesium@lemmy.world 39 points 1 week ago (2 children)

dude earlier today a customer genuinely asked me if I was working on black Friday.

like gal the entire roster works. you gotta be in the gd hospital after a freak accident to get out of working on consumerism day ont

[–] Rose_Thorne@lemmy.zip 26 points 1 week ago

The only reason my manager and I have Black Friday off was taking on Thanksgiving closing duties. Our department is supposed to close an hour earlier than the store. We have kept the store open longer some years, because fuckers need day-of baked goods, and refuse to do it their own damn selves.

Writing "Happy Thanksgiving" on a cake while hearing "Oh, you have to work on a holiday‽ Why don't they just close the store for the day!" Why, I don't know, Gertrude, you absolute textbook example of genius, maybe it's because you "forgot the traditional cake!" again, for the third year in a fucking row, and decided to do your months shopping while you're here! Yes, get more two-bite brownies for your family of type-2 diabetics, that's exactly what they need!

[–] Passerby6497@lemmy.world 8 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

That was true my first handful of years doing retail, but the last few years I got to skip black Friday because my manager forgot 3 years in a row to blackout black Friday and I got PTO in 6-8 months ahead of time. Pissed him off every year when he'd start making the schedule/telling me about how the day was gonna go, only to find out I had it off and already had plans (scheduled months ago) so I wasn't going to be there, scheduled or not.

holiday energy

entitled, impatient, rude adults acting like children?

[–] FordBeeblebrox@lemmy.world 21 points 1 week ago

Yes but they’re wearing, or angrily demanding sale price on, holiday sweaters so it’s festive customer service

[–] leavemealone@sh.itjust.works 37 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I quit 2 weeks ago, for the first time in 20 years I will hopefully be able to enjoy Christmas. I swear you lose pieces of your soul working retail and management seem to be soul vampires as they have none.

[–] spujb@lemmy.cafe 4 points 1 week ago

Bless up! Sending love.

[–] PacMan@sh.itjust.works 34 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Nothing like the torture that is Christmas music that starts in October. I still get PTSD walking into a store these days. 5 years of it and 20 years later

[–] spujb@lemmy.cafe 11 points 1 week ago

WHO needs holiday music for THREE MONTHS STRAIGHT?

WHO

[–] muusemuuse@sh.itjust.works 31 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (2 children)

I suggested at my call center job we change the hold music to All I Want For Christmas is You. That way, if a caller is being a removed I can yeet them into the Mariah pit for a while to cool down.

It was appreciated. It was not implemented. Why are my suggestions never taken seriously?

[–] ShaggySnacks@lemmy.myserv.one 10 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I would not cool down if I was in the Mariah Pit.

[–] muusemuuse@sh.itjust.works 6 points 1 week ago

Ahhhh…..-synth bell-

[–] Macaroni_ninja@lemmy.world 9 points 1 week ago

I suggested similar thing, just different song: Twisted Sister - We're Not Gonna Take It

relevant: journalist taylor lorenz leaves washington post after lying publicly oct 2024 ap news

[–] Passerby6497@lemmy.world 7 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Lorenz attended a White House conference in August and had posted a picture of herself to some of her followers on Instagram, with Biden in the background and the text “War criminal :(”

What's the problem? All US presidents are war criminals. Some are much bigger criminals than others, but they're all guilty. Such is how our shitty country rolls.

After a New York Post reporter posted a screenshot, Lorenz posted a message saying “you people will fall for any dumbass edit someone makes.”

Ah, too big of a coward to say it with her chest.

[–] spujb@lemmy.cafe 5 points 1 week ago

precisely the second part, she couldn’t stand on business abt her based tweet because it was inconvenient to her, and so lied that it never happened. 🤥

working at a restaurant also sucked

[–] yakko@feddit.uk 14 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Simply having a scream in the walk-in fridge 🎶

[–] idiomaddict@lemmy.world 9 points 1 week ago (1 children)

The absolute best thing about working in a restaurant is the walk-in.

[–] Passerby6497@lemmy.world 5 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I appreciated the massive freezer attached, and that all the air handling in there made it so we could occasionally smoke a bowl back there without getting in trouble

[–] idiomaddict@lemmy.world 4 points 1 week ago (1 children)

lol, I thought about the freezer, but our dishwashers smoked meth (I think) in there and it smelled so bad. I guess we didn’t have great ventilation.

Super clean dishes though

[–] Passerby6497@lemmy.world 4 points 1 week ago

Damn, I've thankfully never worked with active tweakers, but I know the smell and how clean they can make things when they get into a mood (assuming they're not taking shit apart)

[–] grue@lemmy.world 4 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

The one I worked at played that song just as often as shops did, too.

Worse than Mariah Carey, I swear. And I like Paul McCartney's music otherwise!

[–] germanatlas@lemmy.blahaj.zone 23 points 1 week ago

I’d be more inclined believe someone who told me they missed having salmonella

Maybe not. Maybe she's just that one worker who's never to be found unless it's time for one of the very few actually fun tasks that she immediately claims for herself, further ruining the retail worker experience. Loading shelves? She's gone. Helping a removed Karen? Poof right into a cloud of mist. Helping the sweet old grandma who's know about tipping $20-50 for holding her cart and putting 2-3 items in it then checking her out? Of course she's already grabbed her arm...

I currently work in retail, it's before Christmas, it's shite

[–] ora@midwest.social 14 points 1 week ago

absolutely psychotic

[–] YiddishMcSquidish@lemmy.today 10 points 1 week ago

I worked at a gas station in BFE and was allowed to pay whatever I wanted on my Bluetooth speaker. I got a real badass one on one black Friday sale and started playing my kinda Christmas music. i.e; the kinks, the Ramones, something corporate, etc.

It was pretty funny seeing all the rednecks brains melt in real time.

[–] Korhaka@sopuli.xyz 10 points 1 week ago (2 children)

What about those of us that worked a retail job with a decent manager that didn't play christmas music all day long on repeat?

[–] spujb@lemmy.cafe 7 points 1 week ago

if the customers are somehow also bearable honestly more power to you lol

[–] Ryanmiller70@lemmy.zip 3 points 1 week ago

That was my old retail job and I'd still rather slowly pick my fingernails out of my skin than go back to dealing with people, especially around the holidays. Managers and coworkers were all 10/10 and I'd love to work with them again. I don't want to ever deal with the public again though.

[–] stray@pawb.social 6 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (2 children)

I've worked retail during the holidays and agree with the "Christmas energy" and helping people pick out gifts. It's like everything is so disorganized and slightly off from normal that it's almost like a dream. Like a post-apocalypse in which I have the skills to save everyone, because I know exactly where in the stock room we have that item that's "sold out" in the system. Everyone adores me because I'm not only willing to sort the candles and frames, I fucking enjoy it.

e: I also have one of my playlists that's "happy" themed. It includes All I Want for Christmas is You, and I will listen to it at any time of year at all.
