My ex and I would laugh when our toddlers bumped and fell down. Not at them, with them. They looked instantly to see if there's an issue, "HA! You're OK! Keep going!"

When my daughter was toddling about her great-grandma's living room and would bump her butt, two generations of women would jump to her aid. My ex would be like, "It's OK! You're fine!"

Figured that out as a child when my 5-yo neighbor fell off my swing. He was stunned, looked at me as to what to do, tears incoming, "Come on! Let's try again!" And he bounced right up and kept playing. (I was mainly worried he'd scream and I'd get in trouble, hence my reaction.)

As long as the child isn't actually hurt then typically you can distract then with something funny and they forget about the pain.

Obviously if they have a serious injury don't do this and contact medical professionals.

My daughter picked up on us distracting her with stuff that she distracts us when we ask her if she's peed or something

Would this not be subconsciously telling the child "if you get in my way I will punish you"?

It’s medieval parenting, it can’t all be based

I don't know that book. And I should!
