Rules (2024-08-30)

  1. This is an English-language community. Comments should be in English. Posts can link to non-English news sources when providing a full-text translation in the post description. Automated translations are fine, as long as they don't overly distort the content.
  2. No links to misinformation or commercial advertising. When you post outdated/historic articles, add the year of publication to the post title. Infographics must include a source and a year of creation; if possible, also provide a link to the source.
  3. Be kind to each other, and argue in good faith. Don't post direct insults nor disrespectful and condescending comments. Don't troll nor incite hatred. Don't look for novel argumentation strategies at Wikipedia's List of fallacies.
  4. No bigotry, sexism, racism, antisemitism, islamophobia, dehumanization of minorities, or glorification of National Socialism. We follow German law; don't question the statehood of Israel.
  5. Be the signal, not the noise: Strive to post insightful comments. Add "/s" when you're being sarcastic (and don't use it to break rule no. 3).
  6. If you link to paywalled information, please provide also a link to a freely available archived version. Alternatively, try to find a different source.
  7. Light-hearted content, memes, and posts about your European everyday belong in !yurop@lemm.ee. (They're cool, you should subscribe there too!)
  8. Don't evade bans. If we notice ban evasion, that will result in a permanent ban for all the accounts we can associate with you.
  9. No posts linking to speculative reporting about ongoing events with unclear backgrounds. Please wait at least 12 hours. (E.g., do not post breathless reporting on an ongoing terror attack.)
  10. Always provide context with posts: Don't post uncontextualized images or videos, and don't start discussions without giving some context first.

(This list may get expanded as necessary.)

Posts that link to the following sources will be removed

Unless they're the only sources, please also avoid The Sun, Daily Mail, any "thinktank" type organization, and non-Lemmy social media. Don't link to Twitter directly, instead use xcancel.com. For Reddit, use old:reddit:com

(Lists may get expanded as necessary.)

Ban lengths, etc.

We will use some leeway to decide whether to remove a comment.

If need be, there are also bans: 3 days for lighter offenses, 7 or 14 days for bigger offenses, and permanent bans for people who don't show any willingness to participate productively. If we think the ban reason is obvious, we may not specifically write to you.

If you want to protest a removal or ban, feel free to write privately to the primary mod account @EuroMod@feddit.org

Benjamin Netanyahu was accused of slander and pursuing a war without end after he claimed the leaders of France, Canada and the UK were stoking antisemitism and siding with Hamas by demanding he end the two-month blockade of food and aid into Gaza.

In what has become an extraordinary standoff with some of Israel’s closest allies, Netanyahu appeared to deliberately raise the stakes on Thursday night by accusing his western critics of abandoning Israel in a war for its very existence.

Israel’s foreign minister, Gideon Sa’ar, also sought to link the killing of two Israeli embassy staff members in Washington to the recent criticism mounted by European leaders.

Oh noooo. The war criminal leading a genocide now also commited slander? How dare he?! Can we really let such a henious crime like slander slip?!

I hope a meteor lands on all four of them. Nethanyahu might deserve it most, but the rest of them are terrible humans as well.

“I say to President Macron, Prime Minister Carney and Prime Minister Starmer, when mass murderers, rapists, baby killers and kidnappers thank you, you’re on the wrong side of justice.”

I absolutely agree Bibi. This is why they are finally starting to stop kissing your behind.

Germany, the country most loyal to Israel for historical reasons, said the amount of aid entering Gaza was “too little too late”. Germany voted against the EU’s plan to review its trade agreement with Israel to see if it is compliant with the EU’s human rights obligations.

Meanwhile Germany wants to double down and ensure it is always on the wrong side of justice.

An umbrella network of Palestinian aid groups said that so far only 119 aid trucks had entered Gaza since Israel eased its blockade on Monday. But distribution has been hampered by looting by groups of men, some of them armed, near the city of Khan Younis, the network said.

“They stole food meant for children and families suffering from severe hunger,” the network said in a statement, which also condemned Israeli airstrikes on security teams protecting the trucks.

This is the same shit like before. Israel backs armed groups in Gaza to rob food while attacking security forces that could protect the aid. The goal is to annihilate any functioning structures to then weaponize the aid, either by denying it completely or by using it to lure people from their homes as part of the ethnic cleansing.

Accused of slander? Netanyahu? I can't believe it! He seemed like a such a good person... /s

BTW: We should really stop referring to what's happening in the Gaza strip (and elsewhere) as "war".

Also, can't we call Gaza as Palestine? I hope that there's no problem for us to acknowledge these people have the right to live where they are (were).

[–] talkingpumpkin@lemmy.world 2 points 13 hours ago (1 children)

Err.. the term Palestine (or "Palestinian territories", if one swings that way) is appropriate when one wants to reference the Gaza Strip and West Bank together.

The (shocking and extremely worrying) levels of violence and illegal actions from Israel in the West Bank is incomparable with the mass killings the IDF is perpetrating in the Gaza strip (also, I've not heard the term "war" used to describe the situation in the West Bank), hence my specific reference to the Gaza strip.

Trying to say even very sensible things about the Middle east without triggering anyone is sure extenuating... I really respect the (so far fruitless) efforts of those diplomats who have been trying their hardest to get people to make sense of the whole mess of reach some (any!) sensible agreement.

It's just like the western media deliberately dances around avoiding calling them Palestine.

Yes, Gaza is Gaza, just like Texas is Texas. But Gaza is a part of Palestine, as Texas is a part of United States.

However, while the media easily put the word United States while writing about Texas, the same cannot be said about Palestine and Gaza.
