Komoot’s the latest wrenching reminder that corporate platform monopolies don’t work for communities. We need open-source, non-profit platforms that are owned and governed by the people.

from When we get komooted

better skip the corporate platforms entirely and try e.g. https://wanderer.to/

I tried wanderer and it is just not good. At all. I wondered if I can contribute to it. But tbh... in this state, i had zero motivation to get active. And I wanted to find something to replace komoot.

Could you please what problems you were having?

[–] cabbage@piefed.social 2 points 5 months ago

Hadn't heard of this, but have been actively waiting for it to exist. Very cool, thanks!

There are also small projects on Github, such as https://github.com/SamR1/FitTrackee

I don't use these stuff so I don't know if it does the same thing as the other non-FOSS.

Fwiw, Komoot was acquired by Bending Spoons, who promptly laid off most of the staff.

Exactly. Don't use Komoot. Don't use anything from Bending Spoons.

I didn't know that. But at least it's our evil capitalist at work. Between evil capitalist in the US or in the EU, there's still considerable advantages in picking the EU one. Money stay closer by, don't feed Trump's economy etc

Weird time to be promoting Komoot. I recently had to help my parents cancel scummy 5€ per week subscriptions they accidentally signed up for.

Someone else linked it before but I also recommend reading the write-up over at https://bikepacking.com/plog/when-we-get-komooted/.

Komoot used to be good, but as everything that has been acquired by Bending Spoons it has been enshitified as someone has already posted.

Komoot was bought some large EU corp and gutted.

I can only recommend runalyze as a better alternative. Less social network, more data.

[–] twinnie@feddit.uk 2 points 5 months ago

I’ve had Komoot on my phone for ages, didn’t realise it could record running.

Is there any alternative with heatmaps, and more designed for trips, exploring and commuting than metrics and v02max?

[–] fluffy@feddit.org 1 points 5 months ago

Enough has been said about bending spoons … but Komoot additionally is NO Strava alternative. That said, I’d be glad to hear about good alternatives for both of them.
