I remember playing some DOS shmup way back in the day called The Last Eichhof. Here's an archive of their website of the game. It has complete school project vibes except they're like Swiss college dudes from the early 90s, so there's so many random jokes that Swiss college dudes from the early 90s would presumably understand but that flew over my head.
I also remember playing some weird shit when I was dicking around with MAME. There's plenty of weird arcade games as well.
I remember Bio Menace for being a super gory Apogee platformer.
There needs to be a distinction between a summoner with like 5 strong minions and a summoner with a trash mob of 30+ cannon fodder.
So few games can claim to have such an influence.
There's many games that could claim to spawn subgenres lol. So many indies live under the shadow of Cave Story and Yume Nikki. Ultima Underworld is basically why FPS (and Souls-likes for that matter) even exist. Every RPG can ultimately be traced back to at least one of these games: Wizardry, Ultima, and Rogue.

Don't sweat it. The entire genre is complete trash from a spectating perspective. You pretty much have to play the game in order to understand what's going on. And even then, it's still pretty boring compared to something like fighting games. Too much downtime combined with point-of-no-returns. A classic example is one team with a team composition that is good early game vs another team with a team comp that is good late game. The entire match is basically over 15 minutes depending on whether the early team comp can capitalize during that time, but the actual match ends in like 40 minutes, so it's 25 minutes of pointless spectacle. The RTS equivalent is someone trying to cheese/rush, but those usually fail 5 minutes in and the player who failed to pull off the cheese/rush usually just surrenders instead of dragging out the match.
