It’s not an actual efficiency or productivity metric but I would say it’s more of a metric shooting workforce passivity and leadership’s power over employees.

I was behind two starlink employees last year waiting to board a flight and they were just glazing musk for several minutes. They chatted about how Elon was dropping the hammer on WFH and how their teams’ metrics included in-office time which was sent to all teams and viewable by all. One of them laughed when they saw that one coworker only had 85% in-office time and gleefully said “fired”. The goals of the CEO completely subsumed into her own being.

It felt very “Enron: smartest guys in the room” but I think there’s at least a nugget of that ideology in every capitalist firm
