From the Wikipedia page. It's kind of amazing that nobody thought to do these things before Cooper.

Aircraft modifications

Due to multiple "copycat" hijackings in 1972, the FAA required that the exterior of all Boeing 727 aircraft be fitted with a spring-loaded device, later dubbed the "Cooper vane", that prevents lowering of the aft airstair during flight. The device consists of a flat blade of aluminum mounted on a pivot, which is spring-loaded to stay out of the way of the door when the craft is at rest, but aerodynamically rotates into position to prevent the door from being opened when the airplane is traveling at flight speeds. Operation of the vane is automatic and cannot be overridden from within the aircraft.

As a direct result of the hijacking, the installation of peepholes was mandated in all cockpit doors; this enables the cockpit crew to observe passengers without opening the cockpit door.

We shield our nation from global threats...

Uh, huh. A guy named Santiago working in a kitchen is #1 threat. Maybe he's not actually chopping vegetables. He could be involved in drug and weapons smuggling, cyber and financial crime, illegal technology exports and intellectual property crime.

HSI conducts federal criminal investigations into the illegal movement of people, goods, money, contraband, weapons and sensitive technology into, out of and through the United States. HSI’s investigations are wide ranging – our cases include drug and weapons smuggling, cyber and financial crime, illegal technology exports and intellectual property crime. We also play a crucial role in investigating crimes of exploitation. This includes combating child exploitation, human trafficking, financial fraud and scams and other crimes against vulnerable populations.

Also - their fucking chutzpah - "crimes against vulnerable populations."

South Park is a dense, extremely residential area. Buona Forchetta is arguably the most popular pizza restaurant in San Diego. This was an early Friday summer evening. They knew the place would be busy, they knew the neighborhood would be busy. They wanted it to turn into this. Barbaric.

I had to write the title myself because blog post title was crap but accurate. And although she's awful - she's not going to perform in blackface.

Heavily armed paramilitary forces stormed a local San Diego restaurant today, deployed stun grenades against a crowd of onlookers, and kidnapped a handful of kitchen workers.

I'll say one thing for reddit - at least it's easy to quote-link stuff. Everybody at Bluesky quote-posts for maximum likes and it gets super-annoying for me to figure out what info is in what tab I have open at the time.

I like the blog but I wish the writer focused on clarity. He tends to be all over the place. And he tends to put a lot of the important stuff at the end of blog posts not in the beginning.

Writer and actor Annette Hubbell was engaged by the Rancho Santa Fe Library in San Diego County, California to perform vignettes from her “Women Warriors” program in 2024. A contract was issued for Hubbell to portray Tubman and Mary McLeod Bethune, as well as Harriet Beecher Stowe, two Black woman and one white woman.

Then, according to Hubbell, shortly before the performance was to be given, the library asked Hubbell to swap out Bethune and Tubman for other famous women, white women, in her repertoire, reportedly because it would not be appropriate for her to portray the Black historical figures.

[...]

What’s likely to get lost here is that, in Hubbell’s own telling, she offers a menu of vignettes from which presenters can choose and the library allegedly requested Bethune and Tubman, only to change their mind as awareness sank in and the performance approached. If the library had done its due diligence, if the various departments that weighed in closer to the performance had been involved at the start, Hubbell might have been asked to do different characters from the beginning and what now is being decried as censorship would never have arisen.

Someone, somewhere along the way at the library really dropped the ball with that initial selection – were they paying attention? – and now the library, and champions of authentic representation, will likely pay the price. This case too easily fits into the narrative advanced by four months of vigorous attacks on anything that conservative firebrands can claim to be a result of legitimate and necessary equity, diversity and inclusion efforts, which they seek to vilify and eradicate.

[...]

It’s impossible not to wonder whether the furor here could yield a Kennedy Center booking for Hubbell so that Richard Grennell and his cohort can stick another thumb in the eye of those who decry his partisan reframing of that institution.

I could guess who Grenell was but I googled anway.

I wonder how much state-of-the-art hardcore military hardware they'll buy. I wouldn't be surprised if ICE's official statement includes a middle finger to the public by way of pop culture references. They say they need the matériel for "urban pacification" in text that sounds like it could have appeared in movies like RoboCop.

I'm going to make some grim predictions.

  • ICE or the cops with them is going to start shooting people. They'll say something insane like they "were under assault" when the crowd was in fact just yelling at them. ICE/cops will make one bald-faced lie after another about the incident. The lies will have little or no connection to reality.

  • The media will explain this as being something worthy of debate when in fact ICE/cops clearly used of tools of death because they can and they knew they'd face no repercussions.

  • A court - probably federal - will charge some people in the crowd with crimes and some of the victims. If ICE/cops are charged with some kind of token offense - it will be for entirely unimportant misdemeanors.

  • The media will frame this new awfulness as debatable too.

  • Repeat.

Do a little dance, make a little love. Get down tonight. Get down tonight.

Puffins resurface on Maine isles

It doesn't seem to matter to one puffin waddling over to join another of the birds that his chosen companion is a one-legged, wooden decoy. Puffins love company.

I know the feeling. And I've started to be careful about comments wherever I am on the net. The last thing I need in my life is to make some throwaway joke that comes back to haunt me years later. Even pre-Trump law enforcement had no sense of humor. Things are infinity worse now and will continue to get even worse.

I posted it so many hours ago but then (and now) - my only thought was [redacted]. And that's a joke I keep meaning to use less. I never want to fedpost at Hexbear but I think of... um... stuff every day.
