During the first Trump administration there was often the feeling of being unable to escape the news. Every day, a new presidential proclamation via Twitter. Every day, a comment made in a press gaggle with potentially staggering implications. For many, the impact was immediate; but more often than not, the threat remained conceptual. This time around is different; things are actually getting materially worse each day, and the human brain is unequipped to notice, let alone process, all of it.

From the continued genocide in Gaza and the disappearing of immigrants off our streets by federal agents, to the dismantling of our health care infrastructure and the ever-growing scourge of gun violence, the pace of news is relentless. Even so, it’s crucial to take stock of events that each on their own would have once been considered a catastrophe, especially when much of major American media would give you the impression that the only thing that happened over the weekend was Charlie Kirk’s hagiographic memorial.

Let’s walk through a few important stories you may have missed—

Hundreds of people detained at the Alligator Alcatraz immigration processing center west of Miami, Florida, appear to have vanished. They have disappeared from the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) online database, and their lawyers and families have been unable to locate them, according to immigrant advocacy groups.

You're acknowledgeing and simultaneously ignoring the main point, in that the Federal Communications Commission threatened ABC's license over this. This is quite literally a 1st amendment/gov't censorship issue - not a platform simply enforcing their often shitty ToS.

And the main idea about pressuring these large platforms in the past about moderating and/or removing certain speech, was that the types of speech that folks were advocating to have removed was speech that quite often led to real-world violence when it was able to propagate en masse.

You can also see the same ideas here on Lemmy. Several of the servers that are most prolific in their spread of hate speech have been de-federated from most of the rest of the servers.

There are plenty of authors, journalists and anti-fascist researchers over these last ten years who've had the unfortunate job of wading neck-deep into the online platforms that DO allow that kind of speech so that they can document and track how those fascist ideals spread, and who is spreading them. THEY are typically the ones screaming the loudest about the need for some form of community based moderation and/or censorship of certain ideas.

Sinclair’s ABC stations will air a special in remembrance of Charlie Kirk this Friday, during Jimmy Kimmel Live’s timeslot. The special will also air across all Sinclair stations this weekend.

What the actual fuck...

"This is extremely dangerous to our democracy"

A protester was acquitted Wednesday of charges that he assaulted a federal agent during widespread protests against immigration crackdowns in Los Angeles, just hours after one of the faces of President Trump’s enforcement policies took the stand to testify against him.

U.S. Border Patrol Sector Chief Gregory Bovino — the brash agent who led a phalanx of military personnel into MacArthur Park this summer — was called as a witness Wednesday in a federal misdemeanor assault case against Brayan Ramos-Brito, who was accused of striking a federal agent.

Bovino, who flew in to testify from Chicago, the latest city targeted for an immigration enforcement surge, said he witnessed the alleged assault committed by Ramos-Brito in Paramount on June 7.

Bovino was questioned by the defense about previous comments he made referring to undocumented immigrants as “scum.”

The jury came back with the acquittal after a little over an hour of deliberations.

Thank you for pointing this out. It seems that you are correct. I've edited my original comment

Can't remember if it was part of that thread, or a comment on it... but there was a suggestion that they likely don't care about the case itself, rather they're more concerned about crafting and maintaining the narrative. Based on how this week has played out, I can't say that I'd disagree

I read a ~~great thread on Bluesky earlier~~ detailing how many times Kash Patel may have completely botched this case by all the stupid things he's said on FOX today. Definitely worth a read!

*Edit to add ~~Skyview thread unroll link~~

*Edit #2: it was pointed out in the comment below that many folks in the thread I linked are calling into question the OOP's claims and professional background. After a brief view myself, there is at least one person within those comments whom I do believe when they say its "full of errors"
I'm leaving my original comment up for now for posterity sake, but I am more than willing to remove it if that would be more appropriate.

TLDW: lawyers from the NLG advising everyone to "Shut the Fuck Up"

Give me a few minutes and I'll edit this with a transcription.

Oh Hello. We were just talking about you kids.
I'm Denise Heberle. And I'm Bill Goodman. Together we've been fighting fascism for over 50 years.
And so much has changed over those 50 years, such as the ingredients to a successful fire b*mb. And the glass that bank windows are made of.
But there's one thing that hasn't changed over 50 years, something that is so important to tell you kids who are new to this movement...
SHUT THE FUCK UP
You're sitting in the police transport van after a protest?
SHUT THE FUCK UP
In a holding cell with your comrades?
SHUT THE FUCK UP
Cop knocks on your door?
SHUT THE FUCK UP
Texting on an unsecured device?
SHUT THE FUCK UP
Pulled over by the cops after a protest?
SHUT THE FUCK UP
Cop just asking about your day?
SHUT THE FUCK UP
Feds call your mom?
Tell your mother to..
SHUT THE FUCK UP
Now, repeat after me...
When the cops come calling, what do you do?
SHUT THE FUCK UP!

Fuck yea! I got their track "Class Struggle" on a playlist and I've been meaning to check out more of their tunes.

You should both check out and cross post this to slrpnk.net/c/music I feel like you'd maybe enjoy the tunes there

"She had green card and passed exam for citizenship and was waiting for the ceremony," Aghdassi told NBC Los Angeles. "She is not a bank robber or thief or criminal."

This Bluesky account posts ICE flight data daily

Sunday's demonstration was organized by a coalition of grassroots groups, including Doctors for Camp Closure, the Baltimore Rapid Response Network, and Maryland Indivisible chapters.

Protesters say deportations in Maryland have tripled since the start of the year. They also point to federal data showing nearly 20% of all U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) air flights in July were operated by Avelo.
