The fairphone 5 official ROM is bloated with about all the google app you can imagine. While it is possible to use it without google account, you will need one to install applications from the official google play store.
You can still use an Alternative store, like the aurora store (download it with f-droid) that can connect to the play store with anonymous token.
If you consider not using google account, I recommand you to install one of the following :
- /e/OS, that has an ad/tracker blocker (that uses the VPN spot), micro G installed and configured (open source version of google framework) and a store that more or less is a fusion between aurora store and fdroid.
- iodéOS : it has an ad/tracker blocker (that uses the VPN spot ) + microG configured.
- CalyxOS, that will let you choose if you want micro G or not. It comes with the aurora store and fdroid installed.
- lineageOS, you can choose if you want to have the google apps, micro G or nothing depending on the version you download.
If you choose an alternative ROM, you'll probably want to download a Gcam app to improve the pictures quality.
I have a Fairphone 5 on CalyxOS. I find it smooth and reactive. Were the reports talking about phones on fairphone ROM ? I've used it a few second before switching ... It is bloated with so much google apps, it's insane.
I have to use a Gcam port to have a good camera experience. I would have liked a better battery life (it lasts a whole day minimum).
Overall, I'm happy with it.
Mull has been discontinued in December 2024. Ironfox is a fork of it.
Kmail suite for mails, cloud... (Switzerland ) they have a free plan (15GO for the cloud, and the cheapest paid plan is 2e/month for 1TO (20e/year ).
Threema for discussions (Switzerland) . the application is 5e, definitv not cheap for an app, but it is a one time paiement.
Swisscows (Switzerland), mullvad Leta (Sweden) as search engine.
=> they do not use their own index system but brave or google (you can choose for mullvad)
All those options are Europeans and have strong privacy policies.

C'est pile ce qu'il me faut pour avoir ma dose de sociabilisation avec mes collègues , tout en limitant mes trajets en voiture.
C'est un confort de folie pour gérer le quotidien (tâches ménagères, courses, s'occuper de la petite) et ça permet à madame de se concentrer plus facilement sur sa carrière.
Ca compense (en partie) le refus de mon supérieur de me passer cadre.
I like /e/OS, but the app lounge bothers me a lot. There is no uninstall button and it is not possible to add Fdroid repos... So I have Fdroid installed in addition to it.
I do not see an added value as if I had the aurora store installed + Fdroid.
IMO, the best addition of e/OS compared to lineage is clearly the tracker /ad blocker app.
Open Mandriva would have been better here.
