Looks cool, you should definitely build the community the way you want to!

It's sometimes easier to build up an existing community that already has a number of subscribers but could use more love and attention. Of course you can also cross post to and from that other community if you'd prefer to grow a new one.

In this case, I'm thinking of !learn_programming@programming.dev. If you wanted to, you could reach out and offer to help moderate

I assume that one was a joke, Ventrilo looks very out of date

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ventrilo

Revolt is nice though. Once they finish upgrading the app, it would be an easy switch

I didn't know about Fosscord (now called Spacebar it seems), it looks cool https://github.com/spacebarchat

Spacebar is a free, opensource selfhostable discord-compatible chat, voice and video platform.

  • Discord-compatible (Use all your custom clients/bots with minimal changes)
  • Selfhostable (Server)
  • Open Source (GitHub Organization)
  • Configurable (Configure every aspect and limits to your needs)
  • Decentralized (no abuse of power and doesn't have a single point of failure)
  • Extendable (secure and cross-platform plugin system)
  • Themeable (cross-platform theme system with design editor)
  • Secure (publicly audited and hosted FOSS software for transparent foundation in terms of security)

Man, you guys really get upset and uncivil just because somebody said they don't like tattoos

No, the downvotes are because you said

I'm honestly ok with this

It's fine to not like tattoos. Other people in this thread have also said that they also don't like tattoos, but they're not being downvoted. You're the one arguing in bad faith here.

There's always been healthy discussion online about people not liking tattoos, regretting a particular one, discussing the costs of removal, and discouraging others. There's no conspiracy pushing for one side over the other. What people do agree on is that detention based on the presence of tattoos alone, is wrong.

Since there are many great answers already, thinking of other different ideas

Does shaking the box help? In which case it's possible something separated

Bulleted lists, a weird positive tone, unnecessarily professional, a summary or "but you should check with an authority figure" sentence at the end

I wasn't sure which article to link, there are many opinion articles with their own takes on it

I agree, at our current moderation capacity it would lead to inconsistent moderation and arguments about where the 'quality threshold' is

Encouraging people to post better quality sources through comments might be better than fully restricting the posts?

I've prepped one here. @Bitswap@lemmy.world, how does this look? I simplified the rules somewhat by combining related rules. Also I don't think the astronomy picture of the day was working so I removed it and kept the link

A community to discuss space & astronomy through a STEM lens

Rules

  1. Be respectful and inclusive. This means no harassment, hate speech, or trolling.
  2. Engage in constructive discussions by discussing in good faith.
  3. Foster a continuous learning environment.

Also keep in mind, mander.xyz's rules on politics

Please keep politics to a minimum. When science is the focus, intersection with politics may be tolerated as long as the discussion is constructive and science remains the focus. As a general rule, political content posted directly to the instance’s local communities is discouraged and may be removed. You can of course engage in political discussions in non-local communities.

I think it's a mix of the two. There are legitimate reasons, and commercial reasons

Synology does not manufacture its own hard drives but instead certifies and rebrands drives from Toshiba and Seagate, leaving out only Western Digital among the world's largest manufacturers.

Synology's telegraphed moves toward a contained ecosystem and seemingly vertical integration are certain to rankle some of its biggest fans, who likely enjoy doing their own system building, shopping, and assembly for the perfect amount of storage. "Pro-sumers," homelab enthusiasts, and those with just a lot of stuff to store at home, or in a small business, previously had a good reason to buy one Synology device every so many years, then stick into them whatever drives they happened to have or acquired at their desired prices. Synology's stated needs for efficient support of drive arrays may be more defensible at the enterprise level, but as it gets closer to the home level, it suggests a different kind of optimization.

Hopefully that title wasn't too clickbait, here is the article and details.

https://www.cbsnews.com/news/south-africa-bird-island-eastern-cape-helicopter-crash-penguin/

Tldr:

South Africa helicopter crash blamed on penguin in cardboard box that hit pilot's controls

Everyone was ok:

The aircraft sustained substantial damage but the pilot and passengers were uninjured, according to the incident report. The penguin was also unharmed, the report noted.

How it happened:

The pilot and passengers were conducting an aerial survey flight of an island off South Africa's Eastern Cape on January 19, 2025. The helicopter safely landed on Bird Island. Before departing, one of the passengers, who the incident report referred to as a "specialist," asked that they transport one of the penguins on the island back with them. The pilot agreed, and the penguin was placed in a cardboard box.

When the helicopter was at an altitude of around 50 feet, the cardboard box slid off the passenger's lap -- onto the pilot's cyclic pitch control lever, the incident report said. The helicopter rolled to the right. The pilot could not recover, the incident report said. As the aircraft descended, the main rotor blades of the helicopter struck the ground, and the helicopter landed on its side, about 60 feet from where it had taken off.

Oliver cited an interview with Facenda and his mother and primary caregiver, Joann, on the difficulties faced by people with disabilities as the state shifted to for-profit “managed care organizations”, leaving Facenda spending hours in dirty diapers.

Oliver played audio from Morley’s testimony at a 2017 administrative hearing, that aired as such: “People have bowel movements every day where they don’t completely clean themselves, and we don’t fuss over [them] too much. People are allowed to be dirty … You know, I would allow him to be a little dirty for a couple of days.”

Oliver said of the snippet: “Look, I’ll be honest, when I first heard that, I thought that has to be taken out of context. There is no way a doctor, a licensed physician, would testify in a hearing that he thinks it’s okay if people have shit on them for days. So, we got the full hearing, and I’m not going to play it for you, I’m just going to tell you: he said it, he meant it, and it made me want to punch a hole in the wall.

“If I absolutely had to put it into words, I guess I’d say fuck that doctor with a rusty canoe, I hope he gets tetanus of the balls,” he continued. “And if he has a problem with my language there, I’d say I’m allowed to be dirty. People are allowed to be a little dirty sometimes, apparently that’s doctors fucking orders.”

Oliver also added that legally, he was required to say that AmeriHealth Caritas restored the patient’s services, but called it a “disgrace” that it was disrupted in the first place.

The lawsuit argues that context cut from the show changes the meaning of Morley’s words, which they quote as thus: “In certain cases, yes, with the patient with significant comorbidities, you would want to have someone wiping them and getting the feces off. But like I said, people have bowel movements every day where they don’t completely clean themselves and we don’t fuss over too much. People are allowed to be dirty. It’s when the dirty and the feces and the urine interfere with, you know, medical safety, like in someone who has concomitant comorbidities that you worry, but not in this specific case. I would allow him to be a little dirty for a couple days.”

I don't see how the full quote meaningfully changes the meaning of the words

Hey, #mstdnca folks, some news to share.

We're in our 4th birthday month!

As many know, we've been working toward non-profit status. Despite hurdles, we've been fighting to get there.

This morning, I'm excited to announce that I've accepted Rogers Media's purchase offer to acquire the instance.

I'm excited to see where we go from here and hope all are excited too!

UPDATE: April Fools!! 🤪

Thank you to everyone that nominated songs, discussed the options, and voted in the survey! Sometime in the future, we will post a detailed breakdown on all the songs and how people voted.

If you want to listen to the winning songs, you can find them below:

| | Rezz, Virtual Riot, One True God | Give in to you | song.link | YouTube | Spotify | | Billie du Page | Fake Friends (liste française) | song.link | YouTube | | | Elisapie (ᐃᓕᓴᐱ) | Quviasukkuvit (If It Makes You Happy) | song.link | YouTube | Spotify |

As a note for transparency, two songs tied for first place in the English category. However, when looking at the individual survey results, at least one of the submissions seemed to be a duplicate. If we took that into account when calculating the results, we got a clear winner for the English category and no change in the relative scores for the French category.

~~We plan on pinning this resource, and we are proposing the following rules:~~

edit: Thank you for the feedback everyone, these adjusted rules will be enforced:

  • Posts or comments with inaccurate or misleading information from this list will be removed, and users are encouraged to report them
  • Repeatedly posting such content will result in a ban from the community until April 28 (at a minimum)

So far we haven't noticed any serious issues, but we want to get ahead of anything that might come up
