The jury in the inquest into the death of George Nkencho returned a narrative verdict on Friday in which they made a number of recommendations for procedures during the deployment of armed gardaí.

Among them, the jury recommended that armed engagement around occupied dwellings should be avoided where possible, that there should be more and easier access to non-lethal equipment and that additional training should be provided to help members of the force identify and deal with people suffering from mental illness.

36,284 new dwellings were completed in 2025, up 20.4% from 2024. The most completions since the stats began in 2011

Still well below the target of 300,000 gaffs by 2030 (i.e. six years of building)

But Ulf Erlingsson, a Swedish geographer, believes Plato combined elements from different times and places in the background description for his utopia. The distribution of the Atlantean empire seems to match that of the megaliths (large rough stone monuments) in Western Europe and North Africa. The geographic description of the island Atlantis, he suggests, is based on an island that is still standing today—Ireland.

"Just like Atlantis, Ireland is 300 miles [480 kilometers] long, 200 miles [320 kilometers] wide, and features a central plain that is open to the sea," said Erlingsson, the author of Atlantis From a Geographer's Perspective: Mapping the Fairy Land.

"I have looked at geographical data of the whole world. Of the 50 largest islands, Ireland is the only one that matches Plato's description of the landscape," he added.

"The hill in which the Atlanteans' maternal ancestor, Cleito, was born resembles Tara, the legendary seat of the high king of Ireland, while Newgrange resembles the palace of their paternal ancestor, Poseidon," he said.

I'm looking to flee my country before it implodes. Many of my friends are fleeing too and they all have their own plans. For what it's worth, I'm gay, and I really doubt the Nazis will leave us alone this time.

I vacationed in Ireland briefly with an ex a year or two ago, but caught covid and spent most of the time resting. I didn't really learn anything about what life in Ireland is like. I'm reading that the people are social and friendly, the food isn't great (though I'm an american and I mostly eat trash anyway) and public transit isnt really great in southern ireland but totally doable in northern ireland.

I'm trying to figure out if I can make this work. I'll miss my sister and the nieces and nephews and a few friends. Material things I can always buy again someday. But it's no longer safe here. My country is dying. I need to make plans and my friends offer might be the best chance I get. I just know nothing about ireland.
