If only there was a community driven, open source anti virus, that is easy to use, and available for Windows...

ClamAV. Not the shiniest one around and I've never used it on windows, but it does exist and filters malware on tons of email servers around the world (among other things).

Curious... have you ever had it prevent infections on your machine?

I just started using it, being quite new to running a Linux desktop. With the AUR attacks recently I thought I'd intentionally download an infected archive just to see if ClamAV would detect an infected download or at least a directory scan... it did not. I waited several days, updated it and scanned again, but still no luck.

Maybe I'm being unreasonable but coming from Windows and it's Defender utility, it seems to be updated much more frequently. I know a person running Windows a person is more likely to be a target than a Linux user, but still it seems like up-to-date AV protection is lacking on Linux and will likely be a bigger problem as Linux desktop popularity grows.

It blocks malware every now and then on my email server and I've seen it clear files on samba-servers with windows clients and prevented infections from spreading in the network. So, it's not useless, but it's not on the same level than commercial competition either.
