Except this is doing nothing for the cause of the protestors, and in fact is being used against them.

That’s what the algo wants you to blame. No one in real life is questioning why places are on fire. I’d argue that looting IS a form of protest.

Except that it sounds like a lot of the looting was organized. Students like having a crowd, building some barricades, and setting a few trash cans on fire. This also sounds like the kind of protest that gets taken advantage of, abused, and userped by people who don’t care about the original idea.

Things turned violent after the police went apeshit violent on kids. A 15 year old had his face smashed and teeth shattered because a cop shot a smoke grenade right into his face. Another had his hand blown off because riot police are using concussion grenades.

So yes, people are rioting because of police brutality and there are looters taking advantage of the police being spread thin.

But what it sounds like is that ghe government should actually listen to protestors to prevent bad actors instead of be heavy handed against a bunch of kids.

Who’s using it against them? Maybe they are easy to burn too?

LePen and friends. This is reality, being edgy doesn't change it.

You mean the people who, were this kind of property destruction not happening, would be making up instances of it anyway?

This building being burnt down is a loss for sure, but handwringing about propery destruction and optics, while ignoring the state violence against people, both in terms of police violence against protestors, and in terms of the systemic neglect of students, feels woefully irresponsible to me. You can't be trying to appease these freaks.

Don't make me tap the Sartre quote about fascists:

"Never believe that anti-Semites are completely unaware of the absurdity of their replies. They know that their remarks are frivolous, open to challenge. But they are amusing themselves, for it is their adversary who is obliged to use words responsibly, since he believes in words. The anti-Semites have the right to play. They even like to play with discourse for, by giving ridiculous reasons, they discredit the seriousness of their interlocutors. They delight in acting in bad faith, since they seek not to persuade by sound argument but to intimidate and disconcert. If you press them too closely, they will abruptly fall silent, loftily indicating by some phrase that the time for argument is past.”

I'm not handwringing about the destruction of this building, and certainly not saying anything about the violence of the police (which is abominable). Destroy the Louis Vuitton shops, the big chains, etc. Burn down a building like this, and it becomes a martyr for the right wing. I know these people personally, I know what they are saying and what they are spreading, and how even "moderates" are reposting their shit and agreeing about those lazy unemployed immigrants, who hate our European culture and way of life. I am saying that we need to be smarter and see how this is propping up the fucking right wing, the opposite of what we need. We can take a step back and say "ok this was too far", even if we support the general riots. We must be able to be rational about things, it's a fact this is being used against the left, against immigrants.

You’re just more privileged then those who are willing to burn out the capital of their enslavers.

You are a house slave mad at the others because master won’t be able to hand you food as easily if they keep making a ruckus.

I say anyone so aghast by capital trash burning should go ahead and defend it at all costs.

I'm pretty privileged, and yet I probably been to more protests in my life and contributed continuously to more local community initiatives than the average person, perhaps even you. I also was able to change people's minds, people who thought the police was always right, for instance. And let me tell you, it wasn't by insulting those people outright.
