Google and Microsoft are profitable without ai. So I'd assume the bubble popping will not crash them

Ok, but you should still be migrating off of them.

Sadly need to keep one of those as a back up. I use proton as my main, but I've gotten a ton of feedback during my current job hunt that my email is going to spam, so I've had to send emails using my outlook backup.

    I hate this world

I know I should be. It's a time issue. My gmail address is linked with my entire fuckin life. I guess that's how they trap you..

I had a similar issue when I migrated. The thing that worked for me was migrating one account to my new email per day. It makes the whole thing super non intimidating.

I do have a tip for you if you’re migrating anyways. Buy your own domain and use it for your email. That way you’ll never be trapped again.

I've never even considered buying my own domain. Would you - or anyone - mind explaining how that works for email? I'm kinda half tech literate. I'm at the level of someone who has Linux on their laptop but has to look up stuff every time they use the console!

But yeah, I've been meaning to migrate for years now. Your idea of one account a day makes it seem doable, thanks.

Basicly you buy the domain that you like. Cloudflare sells them at cost. Porkbun has a huge verierty to choose from. After you buy the domain you will have a control panel where you can configure “where” the domain points to.

After you find an email provider that supports custom domains and sign up they will provide you with where to point the MX (email part of the domain) record. Typically some site they control.

In the control panel you point your domain MX records at the address they provide and you can start receiving email at the email of your choice.

After you confirm you can receive email you should then add stuff to your dns control panel like DKIM and SPF so your email won’t be marked as spam. The email provider will give you specific strings to copy paste.

If the email provider starts misbehaving or you just want to switch it’s just a matter of signing up somewhere else and re pointing the domain MX records while you keep the same email. It’s a little more complicated but I means you truly own your email. That and it will typically cost a little bit of money.

Not crash them, but they'll probably need to make Gmail/Outlook into a paid service in order to cover all the costs.

Google Ads is slowly dying, because people just ask AI instead of searching and navigating websites, and that was Google's biggest revenue.

I don't see how Google would willingly get rid of the goodwill and data of normal users like that. Most people don't know about the sheer site of Googles ad revenue. Also, Google will be the player that shows ads in Google answers, so the moat for ads will become bigger instead of smaller in my mind. Do you have a source on Google ads dying? Last I heard was that it was very profitable for alphabet.

They don't give a monkey's fruity fart about goodwill. They're rent-seeking oligopolists. They'll squeeze their users as hard as they think they can get away with.

Exactly, they don't care about users, they just care about money.

Examples? See what they're doing with Gemini. Even Pro (paying) users will be downgraded to Gemini Flash in less than one month.
