If Kagi were Free (as im Free Beer), Libre (as in Free Speech/Freedom) and Open Source, it were perfect.

But not only it's not open source, but also it's paid. I ain't using nothing that isn't FLOSS.

It's five bucks a month and has a lot of functionality.

For only 300 searches, that's 10 searches a day. I do probably 50 to 100 searches per day.

    So, it's really $10 a month.

I might pay $5 a month for unlimited but I'm not sure about that. Because, you know they'll raise the price if they get successful enough. And, then it's just a constant march to more enshittification.

They offer a genuinely good product and I think it's important to support companies that sell a good product rather than their customers' info.

I paid $5 for a couple of years but eventually stopped because I kept running out of searches after a few weeks. $10 a month for a search engine is excessive but 300 searches a month is too limiting.

I pay per search using their APi and my SearXNG instance, it’s like ¢0.03 per search which I capped to $5 a month, we’re currently on the 23rd of October and I owe them a whopping $2.03, I usually don’t hit that $5 limit.

I only wish they weren’t an American company.

So let me get this straight. Not only it's closed source and SaaS but you guys are paying for your data to be stored on US based servers that are vulnerable to the patriot act? You're paying for that privilege?

I can’t say if the servers themselves reside on US soil but the companies office certainly do, while I admit I was hesitant to give them my money I got tired of being rate limited by Bing/DDG/Startpage on my SearXNG instance, even though I don’t make many requests they do not like aggregator engines, and I sure as hell didn’t want want my server touching Google servers regularly.

Settled with the least worst option available I’d say.

  • Yeah, and here 5 bucks is more or less the ~110% of the incomes of most here and in a lot of parts of the world. Also, even for those that have not so bad wages, it's still sort of a 5% to 10% of their incomes.

For me, i.e., it's much more because I'm unemployed (because of all of the AI crysis, I'm music producer and in my area it hurts so much).

You don't notice it, but you live in a privilege bubble and speak bullshit from your high horse while most of us are trying to find out how to survive with less than 100 USD a month while the basic food basket is more than 500 USD.

And they use Yandex as part of their underlying search.

At this point, I don't see why that is any worse than using the services of any US-based Big Tech companies. They have the same kind of anti-privacy business model, their local political regimes have both gone off the rails, and law enforcement and intelligence agencies can legally or extra-judicially snoop through collected data without the user ever knowing.

Some of the services provided by Yandex are, quality-wise, decent enough. I personally tend to find their translation service to be as good or better, as compared to similar services, such as Google Translate or DeepL, so it's usually my API of choice through Mohzi.

For me its not about the quality provided but about not supporting a company located in a questionable country. To me that includes both the US and Russia.

I agree. But that's why I was wondering why you were singling out Yandex in particular, when Kagi also sources from questionable US companies.

To me, they're all equally problematic.

And they apparently contribute to Yandex.
