Do these empty platitudes do something for you all? They just don't seem to work for me.
Edit: Apparently empty platitudes do actually work for a lot of people. Fair enough.
I think it resonates with people so hard because from him, I don't think it was just an empty platitude. If you've never seen it, this would take about 7 minutes to watch and would demonstrate this, I think.

Presbyterians don't have canonized saints but if they did, Fred Rogers would probably be at the top of the list. He was a Presbyterian minister who made teaching, encouraging, and building up children his life's work. He did it, without being condescending, by coming to them through their television sets every week. Something no one else had ever done before.
I think when he told millions of kids, "I like you just the way you are", he meant it. Kids need to hear that. I sure did.
Empty if they came from someone who didn't spend every moment of his being encouraging children and adults alike to be their best selves. It's Mr Rogers. I read it in his voice. His words hit me right in the balls and made me keel over breathless.
Watch his testimony to the Senate Subcommittee that was planning to cut PBS funding, and tell me it doesn't touch you.
Oof, right in the balls.
It's sad that you think he wasn't being honest.
I think they just don’t know about Mr. Rodgers’ Neighborhood. AFAIK only aired in the US. I only know about it from online videos.
I mean he's doing better than my parents.
It seems empty because you doubt the sincerity, but Mr. Rogers was the real deal, he really meant it.
