I always figured it was the LHC destroying the entire planet, shifting our reality to a slightly less likely reality over and over via quantum immortality.

But it turns out that a national trauma (or series of them) really fucks a people up.

  • Russia got fucked by the Soviet collapse
  • US by 9/11
  • UK by 7/7
  • France by Charlie Hebdo
  • Japan’s Tsunami
  • same for Indonesia before
  • Then Covid did in China and then the rest of the world
