Weird, jellyfin always seems to have it.

[–] Zorque@lemmy.world 35 points 2 months ago (3 children)

Though they seem to keep making it harder and harder to buy egitimate harder copies of the content I want.

"Piracy is almost always a service problem and not a pricing problem" - Gabe Newell

This quote is relevant far too often

[–] jballs@sh.itjust.works 20 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Kind of. But when Amazon has the option to rent a movie for $3, and all I have to do is click that button and it will stream instantly, I still NEVER click that button. It's not really a service issue, because it's available instantly at just the click of a button.

It's more of a principal issue. Like why the fuck am I paying all this money for all these streaming services and you still want to charge me even more? Makes piracy an easy choice.

[–] Atherel@lemmy.dbzer0.com 29 points 2 months ago (1 children)

I still see it as a service issue. I can only watch it once or for a very short time. That's not the service I'm looking for.

[–] 01189998819991197253@infosec.pub 1 points 2 months ago

And you're already paying for the streaming service, but not you have to pay more to rent something that's already there. Definitely a service issue.

I don't even need hard copies, just give me the ability to buy a DRMless file I can run on any of my devices for a fair price. I don't even necessarily need to be able to download it again in the future if that makes it cheaper. I can back my shit up myself.

[–] Dozzi92@lemmy.world 1 points 2 months ago

Que sera, as I like to say.

[–] Enkrod@feddit.org 3 points 2 months ago

My experience exactly. It's only in English though, but I'm okay with that

If you've heard of plex, it's that but you don't have to pay money to access your own content.

If you haven't, it's a media server and client program that organizes your backups of dvds and definitely nothing else

[–] snugglesthefalse@sh.itjust.works 7 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago) (1 children)

Yeah you definitely can't set up an automated system to grab releases of cool shows and stuff then send it to a torrent client to download before being sorted into jellyfin libraries.

[–] kboy101222@sh.itjust.works 6 points 2 months ago

No, not at all. You definitely should avoid the tools sonarr, radarr, jellyseer, and jackett

[–] jaybone@lemmy.zip 5 points 2 months ago

Why are we talking all hush hush here? checks com instance Ohh

[–] TheOctonaut@piefed.zip 2 points 2 months ago (2 children)

Oh cool! So I can stream stuff on the go for free?

[–] DarkSirrush@piefed.ca 5 points 2 months ago (1 children)

The only cost is of obtaining the media you wish to stream, using whatever method you wish to aquire it.

[–] TheOctonaut@piefed.zip 1 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Ok and then I can let the kids watch Wild Kratts in the car?

Yes and no. You could, in theory, put it behind a reverse proxy, but you shouldn't without further security measures.

You could put your server in a tailnet (tailscale, there are FOSS alternatives, but those are more difficult to set up), which is extremely, easy to configure, and allows every device in it (smartphones, tablets, computers...) to access your media server.

[–] jaybone@lemmy.zip 3 points 2 months ago

Upvote for Tailscale. I don’t use it for media streaming but my frigate server with my pet cams is on there. Really great for a free service.

[–] SirIglooi@sh.itjust.works 3 points 2 months ago

Basically self hosted streaming. If you havent already set it up you're missing out, choose what content you want to watch, no ads, watch it however you like...

Home media server with huge security holes for remote streaming.

[–] smiletolerantly@awful.systems 5 points 2 months ago (1 children)

"Hugely overblown", you mean.

[–] three@piefed.social -4 points 2 months ago (2 children)

Enjoy your arbitrary code execution.

[–] smiletolerantly@awful.systems 6 points 2 months ago

You mean, the one in the GHSA that was swiftly fixed in accordance with proper protocols?

[–] spicehoarder@lemmy.zip 2 points 2 months ago

Your poor internet hygiene is more troubling.
