His mentor is Rurouni Kenshin creator Nobuhiro Watsuki, who was convicted of owning CSAM. They're still buds, and I think Oda did an illustration to promote a recent RK anniversary.
That’s sad to hear, I liked Kenshin when I was younger. I preferred the OVA, but the show was goofy enough to be enjoyable even with the ridiculous combat scenes.
